Scuba, Kite Surfing and Swimming Activities

As you can imagine there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports in Puerto Rico since the island is not only situated in the Caribbean and surrounded by plenty of water, but also has plenty of great little islands and caves off the coastline where you will find a number of nature's little miracles. For those who prefer things to be fast and furious, jet skiing, surfing, kite-surfing, boogie boarding and parasailing are popular options. If you are licensed to dive, scuba diving is a great way to explore the surrounding marine life while snuba – a mixture of snorkeling and scuba diving – allows un-licensed divers the opportunity to explore more than they would normally see from the surface. Of course, the classic option of snorkeling is always available and you should definitely bring your own gear if you have some since you will have plenty of opportunities to use it.

Often snorkel trips may be organized with your tour company where you are taken aboard a boat to a more remote part of the island's coastline. On the way you may be able to enjoy scrumptious snacks and beverages and on arriving you will be able to see a plethora of marine life – both from the boat and from the glass of your goggles when you are in the water. All sorts of fish and marine mammals inhabit the waters around the island and you may spot parrotfish, trumpet fish, stingrays, barracudas and even sea turtles. If you enjoy fishing, deep-sea fishing is a great option – and if you don't catch anything you can be sure that there are plenty of great restaurants in Puerto Rico offering superb seafood. One of the most special water activities in Puerto Rico has to the bioluminescent bay kayak tours which are available at certain parts of the island. Here the idea of climbing aboard a kayak and paddling along in the dark is given new meaning as the water starts glowing magically due to the plankton that live in these waters. There are only five bright bio-bays in the world and three of them are in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately some of these bays have been dimmed by the destructive activity of motorboats in the area so if you want to support conservation efforts to preserve this beautiful sight for future generations, make sure that you choose a kayak over a motor boat.

Of course, visitors can also enjoy swimming and tanning and often you will find beaches which are somewhat deserted so you can be left alone to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the island. Whatever activities you plan to enjoy, it is wise to keep in mind that not all activities are available at every coastal city in Puerto Rico. Check in advance to find out what water sports are available at your Puerto Rican destination before packing your bathing suits.
