Founded in 1984 as a non-profit and non-political organization, the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust is supported by members of the local community, as well as by interested donors around the world. The trust is run by a team of dedicated volunteers who are concerned with protecting the island’s unique archeological and ecological environment. Working with local authorities, the trust promotes awareness of the natural resources of Vieques, in particular the bioluminescent bays of the island and the turtle nesting beaches, highlighting what can be done to protect these precious resources, and appealing to both residents and visitors to refrain from upsetting the ecological balance.

Originally built as a beach house on the Ponce de León Avenue of Miramar in San Juan's Santurce district, Casa Aboy was declared a National Historical Landmark of Puerto Rico in 1989. The house, which is also known as the Residencia Aboy-Lompré, was built by Don Ramón Aboy and is home to the Federation of Photojournalists of Puerto Rico, or Federación de Foto Periodistas de Puerto Rico. Opened in 1976 under the direction of Ramon "Moncho" Aboy Miranda, the son of the original owner, Casa Aboy was the first institution of its kind in the Caribbean, being dedicated to providing a place to promote the art and culture of photography.

Located on Castillo Street in the historic zone of Ponce, the Font-Ubides House was designed by renowned Puerto Rican architect Blas Silva and built in 1913. The beautifully preserved building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is a superb example of the Ponce Creole architectural style Silva created by blending the curves of Art Nouveau with Neo-classicism. With his pioneering architectural style, Blas Silva was much sought after by the so-called nouveau riche (newly rich) class of the time. This social class generally consisted of people who had created their wealth through various ventures, as opposed to those who came from families who had been wealthy for generations. The nouveau riche were more inclined to displays of ostentatious living and as the most established of the designers referred to as 'wedding-cake' architects – a reference to the intricate embellishments on their buildings – a number of Silva’s creations are prominent features in the city, including the Subira Residence and Salazar Candal House which houses the Museum of the History of Ponce.

There is a building in Old San Juan that was constructed for the purpose of a courthouse and a post office, and today serves as the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. The building's name is the Jose V. Toledo Federal Building and United States Courthouse. Further back in the history of this site, the courthouse also provided office space for government offices, and looking even further back, it was the site of Spanish fortifications, giving this site and building a rich and fascinating heritage.

In the year 1903 a small library was constructed in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which preserved books and documents that dated back to 1898. It was known as the Island Library. With funding donated by Andrew Carnegie, Ramon Carbia, a Puerto Rican architect, was commissioned by the Governor at the time, Arthur Yager, to design a new library and in 1914 construction on this library began. The library was named the Carnegie Library and all the contents from the Island Library were transferred to the new structure.

A new and exciting event will be taking place in four different locations this year, allowing skateboarders to show off their talents and endurance. The first round will be held in New York City on 30 July, followed by San Juan (Puerto Rico) on 28 August, Plano (Texas) on 16 October and at Hallendale Beach (Florida) on 5 November 2011. Not only will spectators be able to enjoy awesome skateboarding action, but great entertainment and expos after the event. The Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon in Puerto Rico will begin at Sixto Escobar Stadium.

I saw them everywhere I travelled in Puerto Rico. In museums, restaurants, and even in people's homes, the creatures known by locals as vejigantes leered at me, their grotesque features contorted into a maniacal grin. Eventually, I not only got used to them, I became quite taken with them, even bringing a couple home with me.
