If you visit Puerto Rico you will find that each evening the air becomes alive with the sound of song. However, this unique and alarmingly loud croaking sound does not come from a bird. It comes from a pretty little frog barely bigger than the average person’s thumbnail. Known as a coquí, it is clear that Puerto Rico’s little frog was named for its sound. It must have taken quite some time for early inhabitants of the country to figure out that such a big noise was coming from such a tiny creature.

The town of Coamo is located about 10 miles east of the city of Ponce, and both places can cite the intrepid explorer, conquistador and governor in their history. Juan Ponce de Leon, of course, was the first governor of Puerto Rico. He landed on the island (called San Juan Bautista at the time) in 1508 to assume the island’s administration. Ponce de Leon is also associated intimately with the legend of the Fountain of Youth.

Cerro de Punta, at 4,389 feet tall, is Puerto Rico’s tallest mountain. Unlike many Caribbean mountains, Cerro de Punta is not a volcano but simply the highest point in La Cordillera Central (The Central Mountain ranges) that divides the island by running in an east-west pattern. In a way of comparison, the highest peak in the eastern United States is North Carolina’s Mt. Mitchell, which rises to a height of 6,684 feet above sea level. Cerro de Punta is located close to the center of Puerto Rico in the town of Jayuya.

A men’s shirt that has gained popularity as a formal or party dress everywhere is the guayabera. Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the whole of Latin America claim that the guayabera originated from there. Suffice to say it is available in all these countries with their own little unique variations or touches. It is said that the name and style originated from a shirt with patch pockets in the front, made by a woman for her husband in order to enable him to carry guavas.
