Shopping Galore at Plaza Las Americas

All the shopaholics will be relieved to know that Puerto Rico has a mall that seems to go on for miles, has more stores than can be listed in one sentence and also ensures that children remain entertained while the adults shop. To the husband travelers this might not be such good news, but the Plaza Las Americas has ensured that there are plenty benches for those who need to rest between trying to keep up with the women.

The Plaza Las Americas in Hato Rey is the Caribbean’s biggest shopping complex and a favorite in Puerto Rico. Approximately eight thousand locals are employed in the shopping centre and it boasts almost eleven thousand parking bays to accommodate the non-stop shopping traffic. The vision for this enormous mall was conceived by the Fonalledas family, who started construction in the year 1967. In 1968, the eight hundred thousand square feet of shopping centre was opened to the public, but over the years the original building began to be too small to house all the stores and it was expanded. During the 1970’s, two more floors were added, and in the 1990’s fourteen thousand square meters was added as an office complex. Another seven hundred thousand square feet of floor space was added, including more parking and larger stores, in 2000.

Today the mall holds a three-storey Macy’s store, a four-storey JC Penney and other well-known stores such as Lacoste, Pacific Sunwear, Sears, Build-A-Bear, Old Navy, Ann Taylor, Puma, Tiffany & Co, David Tiffany & Co, David Yurman, Marianne, Brooks Brothers and Hot Topic. In the food court visitors will find a Taco Bell, Burger King, Tierra Del Fuego, the Oriental Palace, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, McDonalds and a KFC. The Caribbean Cinemas will keep movie enthusiasts and children entertained in their thirteen screen theatre. The addition of the Galaxy Lanes bowling alley and restaurant that was added in 2006 not only offers thirty-two bowling lanes, but has a dance floor, VIP rooms, bars and internet chat rooms. Throughout the day and night, Galaxy Lanes is filled with lively music, laser effects and an energetic atmosphere.

Between shopping, watching movies, grabbing a bite to eat or practicing the art of bowling, the Plaza Las Americas shopping centre has something for everyone’s taste. It is definitely an attraction that requires a full day and not a centre where visitors are able to stop in for a few minutes. The Plaza Las Americas knows how to make every one feel right at home.
