Fun in the Sun at Puerto Rico's Waterparks

With tropical greenery as a backdrop, colorful slides and sparkling pools Parque Acuatico Las Cascadas in Aguadilla is a great destination for some family fun. Managed by the Aguadilla Municipality, the park is promoted as the largest in Puerto Rico and it has something for everyone in the family to enjoy, including several pools, slides, tube rides and a kiddies play area. The two speed slides offer an adrenaline rush, twisting and turning before emptying into a large pool. Speeds can be increased or slowed down depending on the body position of the rider – sitting up slows things down, while lying feet first on your back, or face first on your belly speeds things up. For those who are looking for some gentle fun, a ride in a tube on the slow moving 'river' is an enjoyable option, while tubing on the Rio Loco is a whole lot faster. The park also features a wave pool, a pool with some fun obstacles, food and snack kiosks, tables and chairs, as well as lockers for rent. For families looking for a change from the beautiful beaches of Puerto Rico, Las Cascadas Waterpark is a good choice.

The municipality of Carolina, located east of San Juan on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico, boasts two water parks – one at the spectacular Balneario Carolina, and the other at Parque Julia de Burgos. Named Aqua Sol Carolina, both parks have admission fees payable per hour and the number of visitors at any one time are limited to avoid overcrowding. These waterparks have been designed with children in mind and are restricted to children 12 years-old and younger, accompanied by an adult/older child where applicable. The Balneario Carolina venue at the beach has a pirate ship adventure playground, a large pool (13,500 square feet) with a maximum depth of 8 inches, as well as fountains, water sprayers, slides and interactive water games. The venue at Parque Julia de Burgos has similar features on a smaller scale. Visitors are requested to use the shower to remove sand from their bodies and feet before entering the waterpark, and to observe the rules of conduct and dress. The Aqua Sol Carolina waterparks are managed by the municipality of Carolina.

The mixed use complex may not have had the best start, with the original developers declaring bankruptcy some years ago when the island experienced an economic downturn, but in recent years things have turned around, and today all the apartment units are occupied and the retail section now has several businesses, including a gym franchise and a grocery store.
