Spectacular Views from the Degetau Rock Observation Tower

The pretty mountain town of Aibonito in Puerto Rico is located in the Mountain range of Cayey, 731 meters above sea level. It is near the town of Aibonito that you will find the Degetau Rock Observation Tower (Mirador Piedra Degetau).

This observation point was named after Federico Degetau, who was the first Resident Commissioner appointed to represent Puerto Rico before the United States Congress, an office he held from 1900 to 1904. Degetau was born on 5th December 1862 in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Apart from being a politician, Degetau was a qualified lawyer as well as an author and poet. Tradition has it that the view from the top of the rock provided him with inspiration for much of his literary work and visitors to this scenic area will soon discover why.

The view from the rock in Aibonito is magnificent, but the Degetau Rock Observation Tower, which was inaugurated in 1996, opens up awe-inspiring scenery to visitors who make the effort to climb to the top. Using the telescopes at the top of the observation tower, visitors can get a bird’s-eye-view of distant locations such as the town of Cayey, the town of Barranquitas, the El Morro Castle in San Juan, Caja de Muerto Island and the La Guancha sector of the city of Ponce, as well as the Cerro Maravillas communication towers in the town of Villalba. With so much to see, it is definitely well worth the effort of the climb.

The Degetau Rock Observation Tower, which is managed by the Authority of Highways and the Department of Public Works, is open at no charge to the public from Wednesday to Sunday between the hours of 09:00 and 18:00. There is a playground for children as well as tables for picnics, vending machines, ample parking and clean restrooms. An area with “bohios” (huts) can be reserved for group functions, but must be booked three weeks in advance. With these excellent facilities and the stunning scenery, visitors often spend a number of enjoyable hours at this unique spot.

So, if you are travelling to Puerto Rico and you're visiting the town of Aibonito, or anywhere nearby, make a point of visiting the Degetau Rock Observation Tower – it will be time well spent.
