Puerto Rico's Annual Culinary Extravaganza

Saborea Puerto Rico is promoted as 'A Culinary Extravaganza' and visitors who have been to this event are sure to agree with that description. This year Saborea Puerto Rico took place on April 4-6 with a program jam-packed with celebrities, superb food, the finest drinks and loads of festive atmosphere. Up to 30 of the island's finest restaurants offered tastings each day, and visitors discovered dozens of different ways to enjoy the island's signature drink – rum. The venue was the world-renowned Escambrón Beach at Third Millenium Park, close to many restaurants, hotels, museums and the magnificent historic Old San Juan.

Friday April 4 featured 'A Privileged Taste of Saborea' at the Condado Plaza Hilton at 7pm, where twenty of Puerto Rico's top chefs hosted a sit-down dinner. Each of the twenty chefs hosted a table of ten guests, preparing the meal in front of them in a demonstration of skill and warm hospitality. Wine pairing was part of the meal and proceeds were earmarked for the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association Educational Fund, which offers seminars and training to employees in the tourism industry.

On Saturday, the highlight of the program was the 'Demo Kitchen Theater', where visitors no doubt learned a few unusual kitchen techniques and tricks of the trade from master chefs. The aptly named 'Tasting Pavilion' showcased the finest restaurants in Puerto Rico, as well as the island’s range of wine, beer, distilled spirits and, of course, rum. The 'Libation Station' was a variation of the 'Tasting Pavilion', offering tastings of beer, spirits and both local and international tasty treats. 'Brew & Stews' offered home-grown coffee and decadent desserts, while 'California Wineries' provided samplings of the fermented fruits of California's vines.

Personalities at this year's Saborea Puerto Rico included American actress Debi Mazar and her Italian chef husband Gabriele Corcos, hosts of the hit Cooking Channel show Extra Virgin; Cielito Rosado; Steven McQueeny Pérez; Marisoll Hernandez; Javier Menendez; Susie Jimenez; Chef Chango; Jeremie Cruz; Efrain Cruz; Lorraine Colon; and many more. If you missed this year's edition of Saborea, be sure to plan to be in San Juan in early April next year for this world-class event.
