The Festival de Metal Boricua
The Festival de Metal Boricua is a festival dedicated to the musicians and fans of heavy metal music. Held on an annual basis in Puerto Rico since 2004, the fifth Festival de Metal Boricua is set to take place on 17 May 2008 in the mountain town of Cayey, Puerto Rico.
This popular event was last held on 17 November 2007 with a line-up including Grim Reaper – A British heavy metal band from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) era; Cage – an American heavy metal band from San Diego, California; Helstar – a speed metal band from Houston, Texas; Silver Fist – a Spanish thrash/heavy metal band, as well as Errant Society, Dantesco, Pit Fight Demolition, Aura Azul, Unzane, Blokke, Incarnate and Under Sin.
Confirmed acts for the May 2008 Festival de Metal Boricua include Leatherwolf and Vicious Rumors. Leatherwolf is a five-member heavy metal band from Orange County and Los Angeles, U.S.A. Their triple lead guitar approach gives their music a distinctive sound. Originally started in 1984 the band went through a number of changes and the current band members are Michael Olivieri (vocals), Geoff Gayer (guitar), Carey Howe (guitar), Paul Carman (bass) and Dean Roberts (drums). Vicious Rumors is from the San Francisco Bay Area in California. This power metal band was formed in 1979 and has continued to be active on the heavy metal music scene, releasing twelve albums as well as a number of singles and videos.
Heavy metal, sometimes referred to simply as metal, developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a new genre of rock music in the U.S.A. and the U.K. Blues-rock and psychedelic rock were the original basis for heavy metal, which has undergone a variety of changes over the years and has spread all over the world, gathering a large following of fans.
The city of Cayey is well known in Puerto Rico for its cool climate and picturesque mountains. The local restaurants specialize in roasted pig and other traditional Puerto Rican dishes along with a variety of unusual local spirits together with music and dancing. So, heavy metal fans traveling to Cayey in Puerto Rico for the Festival de Metal Boricua will have an opportunity to experience some of the traditional delights of this beautiful country during their stay.
