Explore the Rich History and Culture of Toa Baja
Approximately one hour's drive from the city of Ponce and just fifteen minutes from San Juan, you will find Toa Baja. It is also easily accessible from Dorado, Toa Alta and Catano and is divided into ten districts. The districts are named Levittown, Sabana Seco, Campanillas, Covadonga, Pajaros, Candelaria, Palo Seco, Media Luna, Ingenio and Macun. It is here that you will find the municipality for the United States Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Toa Baja carries the status of being a metropolitan area, as do cities such as San Juan, Carolina, Trujillo Alto and Catano.
Toa Baja was founded in 1745 under the name of "La Ciudad Bajo Aguas", meaning “The Under Water City”. This agricultural destination in Puerto Rico covers an area of approximately sixty-two square kilometers and has an estimated population of ninety-six thousand residents. Local residents earn their livelihood through the production of sugar cane, various fruits and from dairy cattle. The industrial sector of Toa Baja manufactures items such as electronic machinery, plastics, textiles, concrete and electrical equipment. They even manufacture rum.
This relatively small destination in Puerto Rico has a vast variety of attractions and sights that attract many visitors each year. Historically rich buildings, such as the Central Constancia sugar power station, are very popular. This building was constructed in the year 1879 and continued its seed operations and cane grinding for centuries. It is also home to a steam locomotive that is in a surprisingly excellent condition. Other sights and popular attractions in Toa Baja include the Palo Seco Thermoelectrical Power Plant, Goats Island, the Canuelo Fortress, the Nuestra Senora del Carmen Catholic Church, Punta Salinas Beach, Hermana Island, Santa Elena Hacienda and the San Pedro Apostle Catholic Church.
Famous Toabajenos, such as the poet Virgilio Davila, have added to the culture and fascinating history of the city. Toa Baja is a destination in Puerto Rico that has all the facilities that are expected from a modern city, but the atmosphere and heartfelt welcome of a small village. It is littered with some of the most breathtaking monuments to the past and has a delightful surprise waiting around every corner.
