Puerto Ricans celebrate the Discovery of Puerto Rico (Día del Descubrimiento de Puerto Rico) on 19 November each year. This is the day that Christopher Columbus (Don Cristóbal Colón) landed near what is now known as Aguada in 1493.
It was during his second voyage of discovery to the so-called "New World" in 1493 that Columbus landed on the northwest coast of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. This set in motion a series of events which would see Puerto Rico under Spanish rule for a time. The following years saw Puerto Rico becoming the center of attention as Spain and other European powers sought control of the region throughout the 16th to 18th centuries, before it eventually became a possession of the United States in 1898. Independence from the United States continues to be a contentious issue.
