John the Baptist is considered to be the patron saint of Puerto Rico. In recognition of this, each year on the 24th of June, celebrations are held throughout the country.
These celebrations usually kick off with large and lively beach parties on the evening before Saint John's Day (23rd of June). If you happen to be in Puerto Rico at this time, be sure to join in the festivities, one of which entails walking backwards into the ocean and falling into the waves 12 times as the clock strikes midnight heralding the start of the official Saint John's Day.
