“Juan Garrido” is the first free African and Conquistador identified in Puerto Rico who arrived with Ponce de Leon’s expedition. He later participates in the colonization of Florida and the conquest of Mexico when he is part of Cortez’s expedition.
I've read that there were non-slave blacks on colombus ships. from what I've read there were non-slave blacks in P.R. before 1521.
