You should gather as much as you can from your family, then sign up with the census to have access to the 1910, 20 or earlier records. I found my mother and father's grand parents missing maternal last names which was either unknown to them or they forgot. For some reason my father never told me his father's name...but I found it and the whole family. My grandfather was a very old man when I was born, if not dead. He was born in 1867!
