You are figuring this all wrong.
First if we won by a mayority of votes it still has to go to Congress and they will do what will be best for USA. Once they grant Statehood. Independentistas can't do nothing about it. (Look at Hawaiians that believe in independence). They are still a State.
Now in the other hand if independentistas try to raise up before they grant us Statehood they will be Squashed by other Puerto Ricans which won't permit this to happen.
Lets take a look at Numbers and percentages.
If you have 3% to 4% wanting Independence out of 4 million, that is about 120,000 people. Now remember that out of those 4 million are being counted dominicans, cubans and so forth. Lets figure that about 3% of 120,000 are willing to revolt. Or lets even figure 10% that only leaves you with 12000 people wich are not trained, contrary to what Papo Blair thinks.(He is dreaming of France with tunnels and so forth) The most they can do is do a demonstration against becoming a State. (Like in La Telefonica)
and it did not persuaded away GTE of buying it.
Demonstrations will happened just like in Hawaii but it still became a State.
Now let me say.
They worry about loosing the culture like if culture was something that stays still, that it freezes. No.... The culture is changing as we speak. Little by little, day by day, it is something that is going to happen no matter what. This people talk without reasoning... When push comes to shove we will become a State. And they will have to live with it. If they are as democratic as they claim to be they will accept the mayoritys choice. If not it will be shown that they are comunist and as such shall be treated. (I do not believe you are, I hope you don't prove me wrong)
