Puerto Rican nationalist Carmin Perez dies

SAN JUAN (AP) – Nationalist activist Carmin Perez, 74, died Friday at Santurce’s Pavia Hospital, where she was receiving treatment for chronic diabetes, relatives said.
Bereavement services for Perez will be held at the Bar Association in Miramar, said the association’s executive director, Jose Montalvo. On Saturday morning, her body will be taken to her native town of Lares, where she will be buried.

Perez was part of the armed nationalist movement that ensued in the island in the 1940s and 1950s. During those days, she worked closely with fellow nationalists Lolita Lebron, Doris Torresola, Isabel Rosado, Blanca Canales, and Pedro Albizu Campos. All of them were convicted and served time for different reasons at different times.

Torres and Rosado served 15 years in prison after being found guilty of conspiring to overturn the presence of the U.S. government on the island.

According to Rivera’s file at the no longer Police Department’s Intelligence Division, she was a “subversive” who along with Campos and Torresola fired shots at police from the Puerta de Tierra Nationalist Party committee.
