Thumbs down

Ok, there they go again! LOL, I simply cannot understand how some folks will cause others to be deprived of their right to study. Recently, UPR announced that they would increase their credit cost and the student body voted to go on strike. Considering that the cost has been kept down compared to many private schools in Puerto Rico, it is still a bargain. Many university students have gotten too use to low cost and when everything goes up (books, forms, equipment, professor salary, etc, etc) they scream when their credit cost goes up too. I remember back in the early 1980s, I was going to the InterAmerican in Aguadilla and the cost was $55-$65 per credit while it was still $15 at the UPR. When it went up to $20-$25 per credit at UPR for a baccalaureate degree the student body paralyzed the Rio Piedras campus and even stopped and harassed other students that really wanted to study. What did it get the student body? Nothing, the leadership was kicked out and many were delayed in their pursuit of higher education. My graduate degree cost the government $657.00 per class for a total of 10 classes, 3 credits each, $219 per credit, a total cost of $6570. I was lucky, but in one case, I had to pay for one class out of my pocket that I was forced to repeat and these kids are complaining about $30 to $40 per credit? Oy voy!
history repeats its self again!

I may be relocating back to my beautiful island after so many years of living in the U.S. My husband speaks Arabic and English and I speak English and Spanish. We want to further our education and I was wondering if you could give me any information on the following:

What language is used at Puerto Rico universities?
Do university professors instruct in English or Spanish and are textbooks in English or Spanish?

Sincerely
YOYO

yolyvelez,

Everything is given in Spanish. There are some universities that have bilingual programs. When I was student in the InterAmerican University in San German and Aguadilla (boy that was a long time ago) there was a program for many kids that did not speak Spanish and the classes were given in English. The only classes that are in English are classes in English as a second language. A lot of the books are in English, but many are in Spanish too. It was funny, we spoke Spanish in class, many of the books were in English and many of my research papers and projects were in Spanish. You can get more information from checking on the schools' web pages. Good luck!

I have a friend who goes to UPR-Rio Piedras and I indeed heard about this strike. I thought it was a joke. We ought to do that here, because tuition is going up every semester it seems. LOL. I was thinking about transferring to UPR to finish my last two years, and since I am fluent en espanol (yes, 99% of the classes are in spanish) I could do it... but not if the tuition costs keep catching up to what they are here -- with less means to make the money to pay for it alla en PR! Plus, unless you sit out a year and gain residency, you'd have to pay the higher rate. Que ridiculo!

Delgado,

La UPI (UPR) is still cheaper than a lot of colleges and universities here in the states. My MS degree cost $645.00 per class when it will cost about $330.00 per class at La UPI. It is sad that 17 thousand students suffered for the acts of 2 thousand students who were against the increase of tuition. Hell, 60 percent of the UPR students receive the Federal Pell Grant! Asi son la cosas en nuestra isla del "encanto."
