Talking Coons and Sambos revisited

Yujike might be on to something. In a previous post he was angry at Puerto Ricans standing in line to recieve the Depression funds that will be coming down to the island once they pass Obama's budget. Yujike thought that maybe we shouldn't get a penny and start to "Doblar el Lomo."

But hey, thats too hard. It's easier to send our politicians to Washington offering to return Vieques to the navy and make the gringos aware that we are indeed willing to change language if so be it. Do the mayors of Guaynabo, San Juan and Guayama ring a bell?

Some time ago I wrote a piece about Sambo and Coon culture. It may be time to revisit that article again.

COONS AND SAMBOS

Although both words describe two of the most insulting of all anti-Black caricatures, I couldn't help thinking, Can these words also describe a huge segment of modern day Puerto Ricans?

WAIT, before the insults begin, think............

Sambos and Coons were portrayed as lazy, easily frightened, chronically idle, inarticulate, buffoons.

MMMMMMMMMM, Isn't this how The Economist described Puerto Ricans last year? Lazy, chronically idle, inarticulate, with 60% living on Welfare. MMMMMMMM Wouldn't we be classified as Coons and Sambos too?

A Sambo was depicted as a perpetual child, not capable of living as an independent adult, always depending on the master for handouts or crumbs, terrified of being thrown to swim with the sharks and really have to sweat it out.

MMMMMMMM Isn't this what our politicians on the island have become, SAMBOS?

Why?

All the representatives of our people fight each other tooth and nail in order to get the most federal transfer payments, a.k.a. welfare and "BENEFICIOS", which are given to us by the economically strapped Gringo tax payer.

On top of it all, the fear of being cut loose from the Federal "Beneficios" sparks the desire of these Puerto Rican Coons and Sambos to want statehood, in other words, to be brought into the Big House by the owner of the plantation.

The Coon acted childish, but he was an adult; albeit a good-for-nothing adult. He was what we call on the island a jaiba, in many cases a Con artist, looking to get the most but putting in very little.

The Sambo was portrayed as a loyal and contented servant. They never questioned their position in life, they were there to serve. If a Coon questioned their oppression they would be called un grateful by the Sambo Uncle Tom's. In today's Puerto Rico they'd be called anti-American. Nonetheless despite that these Coons would question their subordinate status, if push came to shove, they would NEVER want to be cut out of the gravy train, $$$$$$$$$.

The Sambos defended slavery and segregation to the T. Whites then thought, "how bad could slavery be if they themselves defend it." They are contented, even happy being servants, and why not! They knew where the next plate of chitlins was coming from?

MMMMMMMMM, Do these arguments sound familiar?

After all, weren't we found to be the happiest people on earth by a Swedish study?

Although the Coon often worked as a servant, he was not happy with his status. However he was, simply, too lazy or too cynical to attempt to change his lowly position. MMMMMMMM, the majority of Puerto Ricans?

Sambo was identified with "docile" Blacks who accepted Jim Crow laws and etiquette; whereas Coons were increasingly identified with young, urban Blacks who disrespected Whites, MMMMMM ¿Los del Caserío?

Stated differently, the Coon was a Sambo gone bad.

Eventually the pure Coons emerged as no-account n*ggers, those unreliable, crazy, lazy, subhuman creatures good for nothing more than eating watermelons, stealing chickens, shooting crap, or butchering the English language.

MMMMMMM the Puerto Rican Coon has emerged as an con artists of sorts, who lives from hand out to hand out, "Los Beneficios federales." Although he doesn't like the system he doesn't move a finger to change it. After all who would guarantee their trips to Disney and their shopping sprees to Wal-Mart if it isn't the colonial system?

The poorer Coon is the unrealiable drug dealer, the rabid Consummer of Chinese made 99¢ goods at Uno, Dos, Tres, speaking Spanglish, if a transplanted mainlander or producing nothing but babies so their Mamis can claim more welfare. (As stated by "The Economist" last year.)

Most of these Coons and Sambos would immediately pick Statehood if cornered with a status plebiscite, after all, who wants to kill off the goose that lays the golden eggs?

However what they don't count on is with the blessings of their Master. I think that when push comes to shove, the master might decide to look out for his own interests instead of keeping an island full of happy Coons and Sambos.

Miranda interesting post.

But I think the time for cynics is past.

It is time for optimism and change. Especially for Puerto Rico.

BTW, if you have any other trouble with these spamming idiots let me know. I will delete them out of here.

In LA, Sambos are merely half Indian half Black

First time I've seen Sambo's caricatured as Uncle Tom's. The old tale of "Little Black Sambo" likely had Latin American origins. Notice the reference to the "tiger", an animal not found in Africa or the American South, but present in Latin America as the Jaguar (tigre). I always chalked up the anti-Sambo campaign to the ignorance of those who found it to be "racist". You can find "Sambos" in Adalberto Ortiz' novel "Juyungo", the tale of a Black orphan struggling to grow up and find an identity in Esmeraldas province, Ecuador. One of the happier times in the title character's life is when he, a Black raised by Indians, finds refuge with a group of Sambos. By the end of the novel, he has discovered that he is neither Black, nor Mixed, nor Indian, nor White, but Ecuadorian.
