Governor signs three education laws
Thursday, June 27th, 2002. By WOW News staff Gov. Sila Calderon signed three laws related to education, including a law that mandates teaching the history of the municipality where each public school is located. La Fortaleza Press Office Director Luis Torres Negron said Wednesday that the other laws signed change the name of the Urbana High School in Yabucoa to incorporate the name of educator Ramon Quiñones Medina and clarify the duties of the board of directors of the Plastic Arts School. According to a press release, the law on the history of the municipalities is effective immediately. The Education secretary must adjust the school curriculum to include the history of each municipality to the required course of Puerto Rico history. The second law also is effective immediately and orders the abovementioned school to change its name to Ramon Quiñones Medina High School, in recognition of the educator’s work and valuable contribution to his town. The law indicates that Quiñones Medina occupied various posts in the Education Department since he was 17, including school superintendent in Yabucoa and Maunabo. He also was a distinguished civic leader. Also effective immediately, the third law amends the duties of the board of directors of the Plastic Arts School, ascribed to the Puerto Rican Culture Institute, Torres Negron explained. The law establishes that the changes are to optimize the development of the school by extending and clarifying some of the powers that were bestowed on the board.
