Right now, Congress is making important decisions about U.S. businesses that support American families living and working in Puerto Rico. Hello, I'm writing a research paper on Puerto Rico. We could write about any country, and this one is really getting my attention. I would love to have any info you may have on the economy,resources of the economic value or why Puerto Ricans do not pay any federal income tax but do receive food stamps. Also, how much money does US give, and why are so many people don't want the statehood? So, many questions and so little time. Paper due May 1st. Any help?

I wrote the following posting in the Politics section of the Bublleting Board a few months ago: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The entire economy (GNP) of PR is around $30 Billions. The Government budget is around 13 Billions. The money given by the Federal Government to the Island State Government should be around 7 Billions, which means that the State Government generates (or should) around 6 Billions in taxes. However this budget does not include Social Security and Medicare payments to Island residents, which may be as much as 3 to 4 Billions. So adding 7 to 4 gives 11 Billions in Federal Funds, or one third the Gross National Product of PR. Wow, adding 11 to 6 makes more than half of the Island State Economy ($30B) in Government Expenditures. This is PATHETIC. In New Jersey the Government Expenditures are around 20% of the State GNP, and we have twice the population of PR. In the U.S.A., the Federal Government Expenditures (the Federal Budget) are around 25% of the U.S.A. GNP, which is around 4 Trillion Dollars. Somehow the ledger of the Island Government Expenditures must be cut in half to make us a viable State (or Republic). Right now, with these numbers, we appear to be a boil on the head (or the buttocks) of Uncle Sam, so no wonder if one of these days we are kicked out. On the economy of PR, the part of the economy that is not Government, I would say that about 55% is made up of Industrial Output (pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, electronics, garments, chemicals, petrochemicals, and light industry of other types [like cosmetics and jewelry]). The other 45% percent of private enterprise economical output is made up of 10% - tourism, 5% - agriculture, 20% - retail, and 10% - services [banking, legal, and medical]. Why do Puerto Ricans get federal welfare and not pay Federal Income Taxes? They are born American Citizens, so any entitlements that go to Citizens will be offered to residents born in Puerto Rico. That doesn't mean that they receive the same amount of welfare that people receive in New York, or California. All working Puerto Ricans do pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, so in this category there is a fair share of the load. Puerto Rico also pay other types of Federal Taxes like Duties on Imports, and other Taxes. Also Puerto Ricans can only import goods on ships with American Registry, so that is an indirect type of Federal Tax. Working Puerto Ricans also pay the highest State Income Taxes of any State or Territory, approximately 37% of Gross Income.
