HI! My name is Kelly and I am searching for
my father. I never met him and I don't have
much info. other than his name and where
he is from. His name is Manuel Colon-Lopez
and I believe he is from Cayeh, PR. (I don't
know how to spell Cayey?) Anyhow, I am 30
and Manual was in the state of Maine during 1969 working at the Samoset. I was born 7/11/69. Not sure of his Parents name. My baby book state Maria & Jose as his parents.
Does anyone know where I can start to find
my missing Dad and his family? He was around until I was about 4 Months old. The sad thing is I am Part Puerto Rican and don't even know my heritage or how to speak Spanish.
HELP!!!! I would be forever indebted!
Kelly

If you call information in Puerto Rico
(787)555-1212 and ask for the Birth Registry for Cayey you can get instructions on obtaining your lost father's birth certificate. Especially if you have his full name which you seem to have. You can also contact the offices of the IRS and ask whether they show an active ss# for a Puerto Rican man with your father's name. You can ask for this type of information from the IRS in a letter explaining why you are trying to locate him. There is a US Statute known as the "Freedom of Information Act" that gives ordinary citizens access to this type of otherwise "non-public" information.
While you're on the phone with th eoperator in Puerto Rico ask her to check the telephone book for the town of Cayey for a telephone number listed in you father's name. You might find the number of a junior or a similar name belonging to a relative. Just be brazen, call and ask.
These towns of PR have very long memories and people tend to all know each other.

Good Luck.

P.S. It's never to late to learn about PR and your Puerto Rican roots. I would encourage you to do so. There is much to be proud of. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

More Info:

Call the Demographic Register in San Juan, PR; I'm told all of the records are now centralized so you don't have to go through the specific town of birth.

Telephone number : (787) 767-9120

Buena Suerte (Good Luck)

Dear Kelly,

Just wanted to let you know that there's hope. I have been wanting to meet my father for so many years. This morning, thanks to the help from one of the people that visit PuertoRico.com I got to talk to him. And he wants to meet me! Don't give up as I did so many times. At various times, I was afraid he might reject me, so that's what made me stop. But, I wasted a lot of time.

Dear Loreli and Kelly:

I am 35 years old and I just met my father this past January. I was in the same position as you, Loreli. I did not wanted to disturb his life, besides, I did not knew if his family knew about me, so I kept quiet for a long time. I regret it. My mother left me in Puerto Rico with her stepmother.. a beautiful lady that took care of me (she is my grandmother, not by blood but by love) and her half sister (which I consider my mother). My aunt (mother) died on January, but before she died, she contacted my father and told him my situation... to make a long story short, when my mother died, that's when I met my father. It was an emotion that I can not explain...Now, that imcomplete chapter of my life is closed. No more wondering how does he looks like, do I have any brothers and sisters...etc. We keep in touch... not much but we are trying to build a relationship.

My advise to you, keep on looking. If he rejects you...is his lost...not yours.

Good luck!!

Liz35
