Hi M.Nixon
How you doing! When you get to PR make sure you get a car. Most jobs are mostly away from where you will be staying. I was in PR this past december and Arecibo was still recovering from the hurricane!! It also has changed a lot from when I use to live there. I lived in Barrio Obrero, right down the block from the distilling plant, about a 15 to 20 minute walk to town. You should enjoy living there. Real different from NYC. I plan to live there when I retire, I hope!!! If you have been praticing the language, then you will learn real fast. Arecibo stores are all spanish speaking. But the Islands are beautiful and you should enjoy your stay. The Ulua Man J.Vargas@puertorico.com |

The only warning i can give you is, be extra careful and keep away from la costa del mar all the way going down to that area where they gave me and my wife a three mile chase that almost made my wife crash. Its going towards Barceloneta. Don't drive alone at night time, it is very dangerous. Keep a low profile. Arecibo is a very nice place to live and it has its Mall and places to go shopping and movies and other recreational areas such as the Las Cuevas de Camuy. The week I was there, a man was murdered up the block where I was staying and another man two miles down the road. It is very common for people to get murdered in Puerto Rico now and days just the same way as any other place in this world. With the exception that we keep away from other people's business and go our way. Of course, that does not justify the fact that we must walk away while seeing someone being violated. I believe we should be eye witnesses to help others, and again, with the exception not to be noticed. I pray that you have a lot of fun there. There are a lot of hills to climb and most of it is campo. I stayed at Dominguito. It is a very beautiful place, except that the beaches are not that great, except for certain areas. I made this joke after I left, I told my wife, what they should do is, right next to the car rental have a gun rental. My friend, all I can say is, The force be with you. To me, Puerto Rico is not the same as it used to be. The Island has made many changes though. By the way, keep away from the la carretera Numero dos, stick to the main highway instead at night time. One of the best churches to visit in Carolina is Fuente de Agua Viva. Pastor Rodolfo Font My friend once again, I wish you all the best in the world and do the right thing. God bless you and keep you. You friend, YeYe Gonzalez

Arecibo, PR
You know everyone has a different perspective of what is dangerous. I lived in Puerto Rico while I went to College at the Inter. I took buses at 5 am in the morning and usually stayed out partying until 5am on weekends. Took rides on many occasions with strangers and never felt in danger. I vacation every year in PR and drive all over the island on the number 2. I have never had a bad experience. I know of several people that have been murdered but unfortunately all of them had business with the drug trade. My sister lives in PR and she says that the crime rate does not affect her life style. Yes, you can be a victim of random crime but that can happend anywhere. In NY I was pushed into a coming train by some lunatic. Fortunately I had some injuries but with the kindness of strangers I received medical attention quickly and have since recuperated and moved out of NYC. Still I visit NY and travel on the subway.
For anyone moving to PR and living in the States for a long time the most difficult aspect to get used to is the infrastructure of government agencies. It seemed to me that there was so much nepotism that when you needed something if you dont know the right people you can wait for the whole day and no one blinks a eye! I love Arecibo and spent alot of weekends there with friends. We used to go to the Malls, pueblo, and nearby beaches. I was never bored living in PR but now that I am back in the States I wonder why I didnt stay. Good jobs are hard to come by and even college graduates are unemployed because jobs are so hard to find. Be prepared. Seems that most people I went to college with either moved to Florida, work for the PR police or for the electric company. Some started their own businesses. Not too many choices. And yes if you can buy a gun and get your permit it is not a bad idea. Anywhere. I keep a weapon and I dont live in a urban area. Good luck. |
