The Governor is Sila María Calderón of the Popular Democratic Party, which supports the commonwealth.

The economy of PR is based on manufacturing and services, while a small percent of it is agricultural. The economic situation now is bad, with many factories leaving because of the phasing-out of the IRS section 956 tax-code.

The census of Puerto Rico is obtainable at http://www.gobierno.pr which is all in Spanish. However, the population was 3.8 million in 2000.

Medical treatment is not as great as it is in the mainland USA, but they meet Federal standards and regulations. Many Puerto Ricans use la tarjetita, which, during the Governorship of Dr. Pedro Rosselló (1993-2001) of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, was introduced after he privatized many public hospitals. It's like medicare in the USA, you can go to private hospitals and have the gov't pay for your care. However, it created a huge defeceit in the PR gov't's budget.

Public Education isn't that great, but that's the same for the USA as well. About half of the PR population goes to private schools. However, PR ranks #6 in the world in school enrollment. I would rate it a 5, lol.

Go to the thread named Websites of Puerto Ricans on the Open Board of this forum site. It might be on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd page. It has tons of links to websites, some of which have links to tons of other websites on PR. Take care.
