Hello,
I was born in Bayamon and at 2 or 3 years old my parents divorced. My mother brought me to the states and I grew up here. I never lived around Boricuas or any Latinos I spoke spanish til I was 11 and was told by the school that if I didn't speak english that they'd have to put me in a class for the "slow" children. so I worked hard on my english til I spoke without an accent. now i'm a women and can't speak spanish.. I live around Mexicans who can't speak english.. The spanish I do know is only bad words and I don't know why I never forgot them :-) The mexicans speak slow and it's easy for me to pick it up but it's spanish I never heard before..nothing against Mexicans but I want to sound Boricua..I have a friend who is half Puerto Rican and she doesn't speak it either. |

I was feeling so bad until I saw an article on students in Puerto Rico...by the time they are in the university they no longer speak can spanish and prefer to take test in english and my mother always told me the only Boricuas who don't know any english are the poor ones who never stayed in school who live out in the country.
so maybe there is no need for me to learn again. |
