Hola, im a 20 year-old black female college student majoring in spanish. Although i made A's in all three semesters of spanish that ive taken so far, i still feel a little intimidated by the language. I know I can speak it well, to have just started learning spanish, b/c my professors & hispanic friends tell me. The problem is when they speak to me in the fast pace they are accustomed to. I can only catch a few words they say & its hard for me to respond sometimes. I watch those hispanic cable channels and I can only understand a few words, including the last word they might say at the end of a sentence lol. I even listen to the music, like reggaeton, bachata, & salsa, but I cant understand that unless I find the lyrics and translate the words. Im not necessarily asking someone to help me, unless u would like to, but if anyone can give me some words of encouragement or if someone understands what im going thru & can relate to it, i would appreciate some advice to ease my frustration. Gracias por su tiempo usted!

I know exactly how you feel. i have the same problem. finally someone else understands what im going through. i can't undestand native speakers well eigther. i watch telemundo with my girlfriend all the time. she knows what their saying but not me. i can speak it okay but not very fast. but what im trying to do is just watch spanish shows and movies. also another good way is to get a cd of spanish language and listen to how they speak. thats all i can tell you. im the only white person in my neighborhood and school. everyone else around me is latino and can speak spanish fast but not me. this is my last year of high school and after ima go to a community college and study more spanish. Me i won't stop until i can speak read and write spanish fast. im glad im not the only one who cant understand native speakers. i thought i was alone. gracias.
