Deam Mammy Caliente: You will no doubt get very caliente if you get involved with Vieques, in more ways than one, and I guarantee you will really learn the language Boricua style!

Let's begin with an international perspective, if they learned the Boricua style language of Vieques, so can you!

Mensaje de solidaridad con Vieques, recibido de Peter Urban (San Francisco), líder en EU de grupo socialista de Irlanda del Norte (nos llegó vía compañera de Mayaguez con Vieques)


La isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico, se ha usado por mucho tiempo para ejercicios de entrenamiento de la Marina de Guerra de EU, con bombas vivas, a pesar de años de protestas. El bombardeo durante sesenta años ha causado una crisis ambiental y de salud en Vieques. Cuando el gobierno estadounidense no hizo caso al reclamo del pueblo de Puerto Rico, que vive bajo el control colonial de EU, el pueblo respondió con desobediencia civil masiva, ocupando la zona de tiro para evitar más bombardeo.

Ante la amenaza del reinicio del bombardeo en abril, se prepara para una nueva ronda de desobediencia. El Comité Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques (CPRDV) junto a otros grupos en Vieques y de la Isla Grande de Puerto Rico, incluyendo muchas organizaciones progresistas, finalizan los planes para las próximas acciones de desobediencia civil.

La Marina estadounidense planifica bombardear en Vieques el 4 o 5 de abril y el CPRDV ha lanzado un llamado para el apoyo internacional. El IRSP, que por mucho tiempo se solidariza con la lucha por la liberación nacional de Puerto Rico y asistió a la conferencia internacional sobre los prisioneros políticos puertorriqueños hace dos años, exhorta al pueblo trabajador irlandés a manifestar su solidaridad con las protestas en Vieques, enviando cartas de protesta a la embajada de EU en Dublin o Londres. También exhortamos a los trabajadores irlandeses a llevar a cabo protestas frente a las embajadas el 4 y 5 de abril. En las palabras del CPRDV: “En estos momentos, apelamos a la creatividad y la solidaridad para llevar a cabo acciones por la paz en Vieques los días 4 y 5 de abril en distintos puntos del planeta.”

Grupos que luchan por la justicia y paz en las Filipinas, Panamá, Okinawa, Japón, Korea, India, Hawaii, Guam, Inglaterra, Italia, Francia, Scocia, España, Holanda y a través de América Latina, han demostrado su apoyo a la lucha de Vieques en el pasado y se necesita ese apoyo de nuevo, ahora.

El pueblo militante de Puerto Rico “está preparado para enfrentar directamente al monstruo militar que viola nuestro mar y nuestras tierras” en Vieques, según expresa el CPRDV, para defender sus derechos más básicos de vivir en paz y con dignidad. El pueblo irlandés, que ha sufrido por tanto tiempo la violación de estos derechos básicos, entiende muy bien esta justa lucha. !Demostremos ese entendimiento y solidaridad al mundo entero en abril!

The Puerto Rican Struggle Focused on Vieques

The island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, has long been used by the American Navy for training exercises using live armaments, despite years of protest from the people of the island and the people of Puerto Rico as a whole. The Navy bombing has been responsible for an environmental and health crises on Vieques that has been ongoing for more than sixty years. With the US government refusing to heed the wishes of the people of Puerto Rico, which the US continues to hold as a colonial property, the people of Puerto Rico responded with mass civil disobedience, occupying the naval testing grounds to thwart their ability to continue its bombing.


They are now faced with the threat of renewed bombing on Vieques at the beginning of April and they are preparing a new round of civil disobedience. The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV), together with other groups in Vieques and the organisations of the Puerto Rican national liberation struggle, among many progressive organisations, are finalising the last details for the new civil disobedience actions.

The US Navy plans to resume bombing Vieques on the 4th or 5th of April and the CRDV has called for international support for their struggle. The IRSP which has long been in solidarity with the struggle for national liberation in Puerto Rico and attended an international conference on political prisoners in Puerto Rico two years ago, calls upon Irishworking people to demonstrate their solidarity with the protests in Vieques by sending letters of protest to the USEmbassy in Dublin or London. We also encourage Irish working people to demonstrate at the Embassies on April 4th and 5th. In the words of the CRDV: "At this moment, we appeal to that creativity and solidarity to carry out actions for peace on Vieques on the 4th and 5th of April in different parts of the planet."


Groups struggling for peace and justice in the Phillipines, Panamá, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, India, Hawaii, Guam, England, Italy, France, Scotland, Spain and throughout Latin America have demonstrated in support of the Vieques protests in the past and have been called upon to do so again.

The militant people of Puerto Rico are "prepared to directly confront the military monster that rapes our sea and lands" in Vieques, in the words of the CRDV, in order to defend their our most basic rights to live in peace with dignity. The Irish people, who have seen the northern nationalist community denied these most basic rights for so long, can well understand this just struggle. Let them show their understanding and solidarity to the world this April
