I just finished reading Tina Cassanova's second book, a Novela titled Como Paloma en Vuelo. I couldn't put it down. It is excellently crafted. Tina's style is refreshing and she shows off her dominion of the Spanish language as no other contemporary Puerto Rican writer with which i am familiar. Her Novela is smart without being arrogant. It is a fictional story of two Puerto Rican families beginning in the 1930's. Their stories are interweaved with real historical facts about the political and socio-economic conditions of the Island between 1930 - 1970.
It is good reading for young people who may want to get a flavor for History of Puerto Rico but can't stand reading through tedious history text books. You will be entertained, immersed in beautiful Spanish prose and educated about Puerto Rican history all through one book.

Tina Cassanova was born in Ciales in 1949. She has previously published a Novela under the name of Sambiron for which she received Mencion Honorifica del Premio Annual del Instituto de Literatura Puertorriquena in 1998.
Unfortunately the book is not yet for sale in the US, since it was published through a Puerto Rican publishing company. If anyone is interested in obtaining the book. Call or email:

Happy Reading.

Should the lackluster interest in literature surprise me? Maybe not from the cyber community. Wow... Does anybody beside chicaborinquena read?

Pablo:

I'm in the middle of HP's the Sorcerer's Stone. I love it. I don't think anyone has written anything better for children since Mark Twain and Hans Christian Andersen. I read El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba when I was 18. That was 26 years ago. Wow. Time has flown. I enjoy Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The man is brilliant. You should read Chronicas de una muerte anunciada if you
haven't yet. I almost picked up The Elegant Universe a couple of weeks ago. How is it? Maybe I'll read it.

Take care.

Thumbs up

Este fin de semana termine de leer "In the Name of Salome",Autor, Julia Alvarez. Excelente lectura. Julia, la autora de "How the Garcia Girls lost their Accents" y "In the Time of Butterflies", se la comio con esta novela semi-historica que nos remonta a los tiempos de la Revolucion Dominicana (la segunda de ellas) para contarnos la historia de la gran poetisa Dominicana Salome Urena.

Leanlo ! ! !
