After a successful Los Angeles run, the highly praised theatrical presentation ³Calling Up Papi², written and performed by actress/comedienne Lydia Nicole, directed by veteran actor/ writer/comic Danny Mora, heads to New York for a mid summer engagement at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center, on commencing Thursday, August 2, 2001 until Sunday, August 26, 2001.
³Calling Up Papi³ lauded by Los Angeles reviewers as must see show for it¹s raw, honest, noteworthy story telling and powerfully portrayed characters. This outrageous candid urban saga chronicles Lydia¹s Spanish Harlem childhood during the radical sixties and groovy seventies, setting course through uncharted territory, providing a cast of unforgettable characters.
Lydia Nicole, left the streets of Harlem at eighteen, for the lights, camera, and action. She earned acclaim as an actress in ³Stand and Deliver². She received a Youth in Film award and Pepsi¹s Artist of the New Generation. Also recognized for her stand-up, by Hispanic magazine as one of the top 100 Latino Comics. Fresh off the comedy circuit with the highly touted stand-up show ³The Hot & Spicy Mamitas," celebrates the success of their self titled comedy CD. She just wrapped a lead role opposite Jason Stuart in 10 Attitudes. She¹s also playing Steven Bauer¹s wife in the upcoming independent film "Rave". Lydia encompasses a wide range of network, cable television and movie credits including Martial Law, the "Roseanne Show", "B.E.T. Comic View", "Indecent Proposal," and "Hollywood Shuffle."
The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center is located at 107 Suffolk Street in the Lower East Side between Rivington and Delancy Streets. The show runs Thursdays, through Sundays, beginning August 2, 2001 until August 26, 2001. Showtime is at 8:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $15.00.
