Peace and Blessings.
My wife and I went to go see the movie, 'Baby Boy.' I think the best part of that entire experience was seeing the trailers of the up and coming movies. Such as 'Training Day' with Denzel Washington. This is the first time that I get to see him play a bad guy role, this time as a corrupt police officer. Nonetheless, I think John Singleton could have left out some the sex scenes. The story was alright, except for the fact there was really no theme to the movie. I come in contact with many African American males like the one portrayed in the movie. But, that does not represent the vast majority of Black males. I would say it represents 25%. I know many more who are hard working, entreprenuerial, faithful fathers and husbands. I think they play too much on that 25% group. There are way more success stories of African American men that have defied the odds and accomplished something for themselves. Yes, racism plays a major part. But in the Holy Qur'an Allah says that He will not help a people who will not help themselves. Movies like this will not help the African American community, but continue the legacy of stereotypes that has plagued it in its relationship with other ethnic groups. Thus I give this movie a thumbs down for theme, but a thumbs up for the acting. Tyrese the singer, impressed me as an actor playing in such a major film.
