[i]The Prospects of Industrial Civilization
by: Bertrand Russell and Dora Russell

This is a book I highly recommend to anyone who wishes to supperate themselves and higher thier education level. It is a great book which blends Philosophy and Politics. I believe it is a great reference to anyone, whether lefty or righty if you know what I am talking about. If not, then that's yet another reason why you should read this book, and read, read, read. Read everything you can. People don't like to read anymore and I just don't understand why??? You need to read. We all need to read. It is very important.

The Prospects of Industrial Civilization provides a rare glimpse into areas of Russell's political thought that are often ignored. Written with Dora Black (who became Russell's second wife), and published in 1923, it is revealing both as a period piece and as a book for our times. Russell criticizes his own age and ours by demonstrating that humanity is locked in a struggle against the contending forces of industrialism and nationalism.

He views industrialism as a threat to human freedom, made more dangerous because it is linked with nationalism. He proposes one government for the whole world as a solution.

Russell, however, is not blind to the positive side of industrialism, arguing that the global village and political democracy could be its eventual results.

RE:People don't like to read anymore........

Happy January, Guaili!

I agree..it is unfortuanate that people are not reading anymore. A book provides a more stimulating source of creativity and imagination for the human mind. In my opinion, watching television and surfing the internet is fine, as long as one doesn't become "glued" to either one! I love to read! If you don't find me here typing away on PR.com, I'm reading a book. As far as reading interests, I'm pretty versatile regarding subject matter- one day I'll be reading "The Path to Tranquility" and several days later, be glued to "The Cobra Event". Reading is definitely an important and invaluable tool!
