For a while now... I recently spent a semester in school getting back into it and now it's fun again. We actually had a festival here this week and we had some players from Brasil come on and they did a great job showing what Capoeira is all about... even though most of the crowd was Latino, a few did not know what Capoeira is... |

It definitely does both... especially the former (to me, anyway). I play for fun, but discipline can indeed be gleaned from practicing the protection moves and improving your timing and reaction... |

It appears to be a sport dominated by men; However, I did see one female in a group at our last Latino Festival. Seems like it targets upper body strength. As you know that's not a strong point for women. I would like to try it someday. I've tried yoga & palates. Capoeira can't be that much tougher. |

I tried to encourage my friend to play. She said the same thing.
And yes, traditionally women did not play... especially back when the slaveowners outlawed it thinking the slaves were going to mount an insurrection or something. LOL the women mostly stood in the circle and helped cheer/clap. But the group that was here this week was LED by a woman, a GORGEOUS woman from Panama, ironically. You should try it (and avoid that yoga -- you know it is intertwined with eastern philosophy and transcendental meditation. As a christian, you should avoid that). |
