I did a test once by testing my girlfriend that loves Merengues and she knows what Merengue is. I put a couple of Plenas while we dancing in my house one day and she continued to dance it thinking it was Merengue.

Negativo, el Merengue fué originalmente música Haitiana, que surgió de una mezcla de la música francesa con la africana. Se traslado a la Rep. Dominicana, y fué introducida a Puerto Rico por primera vez via el conjunto Quisquella.
Aun que en PR existían ritmos parecidos por la herencia africana este genero, que nos gusta mucho y lo disfrutamos en verdad nace del Haitiano.
La salsa es otro cuento.
