Merengue is a very argued subject between latin music maestros but theres a couple of things that most agree own:
1. Merengue came to the Dominican Rep. via Puerto Rico. (By plantation workers moving throug the islands and if they came to Dom. Rep. from PR they brought Plena and UPA with them) 2. Merengue and Plena are very similar music and dances, to the extreme that if you pay close atention to the instruments and how the Plena is played you would confused it with Merengue. I did a test once by testing my girlfriend that loves Merengues and she knows what Merengue is. I put a couple of Plenas while we dancing in my house one day and she continued to dance it thinking it was Merengue. But to prove my point that Merengue has ROOTS/ORIGINS in Puerto Rico, (PLENA)please go to these pages: (IT DOES NOT TAKE A ROCKET GENIUS TO MAKE THE CONNECTION) www.cspvrde.edu/homes/castillo/merengue.htm#origin www.mindspring.com/~adiascar/musica/merhst-s.htm www.prfdance.org/plena.htm Merengue page.cjbnet |

Beecho,
I'm a friend of Lja, and I just read your response to Lugo on her man dilemma. Although I'm sure your intentions were good, your sorry ass advice has alot to be desired. Get in shape? Have plastic surgery? Darling, stick to your blow up and barbie dolls You almost make me laugh. Almost. E. E. |

This message is for Lja:
Dear, I don't have any Barbies or blow-up dolls, I can have the real thing at any time, unlike some people we both know! So if you don't like my advice, it's like they say, if you call a crazy person crazy they throw a fit, but if you call a sain person crazy they just laugh. So you must be really ugly, fat, stupid and a big oh HO! |

Beecho is correct about merengue being influenced by Puerto Rico's Bomba and Plena during its early stages. We're talking 200 years ago, people. This doesn't make merengue any less dominican. Music in the Caribbean, generally has been influenced by all srts of ethnic groups. The Caribbean is not so big and the slave ships from Portugal, Spain and England made stops in every Island. The biggest contribution to music in the Caribbean however is of African brought to the ccaribbean as slaves. Let's give credit where credit is due.
Now I think that Beecho and E should kiss and make up. ------------------ Que Viva Puerto Rico Libre. |
