The American Puerto Rican

How are you? I hope good. Mari you are right, we are all Americans, currently. That can change in a snap the political status of Puerto Rico is not yet definite nor define. We are Americans, but we are also Puertorricans and I do not mean in the sense as or like Georgia State or NY state. We are still considered sort of a Nation since we represent Puerto Rico alone in the Olympics or Miss Universe and we do not or cannot vote for the USA President. This situation can change very soon, in fact, we are more likely to become a Republic than a 51st State as many would like. The Political machine in Washignton is faced with this great dilema and they have no idea how to resolve it none, they only have money and political power options. Those options only favor Republic or Libertad for the Island. The point is that either we get by our own (maintaining our dignity) or we get dumped in a humiliated form and those are our options.

I believe that we let identity issues get the best of us. It's like teenagers from wherever, trying to find whom they are in this world. We sort of teach our kids to define themselves, but that's all we can do. They ultimately make their own runs in life and that is crucial enough.

What I can't figure out is why does it seem so important that PR maintains it's own national team on the olympics, or a sole representative for the ms universe contest, when there are bigger needs like, better hospitals, education. Those I believe are the real issues that ought to be tackled instead of focusing on some kind of status symbol. However, while people in PR continue to be brain washed about the bad things that would result if PR became a state, this debate will continue. My God, look at Hawwai. Those folks are just as proud of being who they are regardless of their current political status.

Yeah, the Independentistas fight a noble cause but in reality I don't hear to many of them volunteering to recojer el cafe del monte adentro.

So don't be cutting Uncle Sam's legs yet. There had been much progress since Munoz Marin stated this relationship.

What I cant figure out is why National issues are so non important to most PR's. Its funny cause you go to the island, you hear complaints about theres too many Dominicans or my favorite... "el eh de por alla" Then theres complaints about the Navy. Statehooders are quick to complain about how things are in the present... Will some food stamps keep you quiet? Or better yet, lets keep bombing the shi#% out of you. How bout we impose citizenship so you can fight in the front lines. Maybe well just crush any notion of independence by turning one against the other (just like Colt 45, divide and conquer... works every time) Lets create labels for these people. Communist... ingrate. After all Ive done for you. Hey, I have an idea... lets shower the island with welfare... that'll destroy any work ethic. Que bueno vivir asi, comiendo sin trabajar! In all seriousness, dont you find it apalling that YOUR issues (I mean the residents) are not in YOUR control. What will you do if (and when) Congress grants independence. Why is it that there is no vote on the part of US citizens and US Ricans on this neverending issue? Over here in NY we are constantly bombarded with media coverage fo the Middle East crisis and Spring Training! (METS WILL RISE AGAIN)... point being is that YOUR issue means almost nothing. I've read many posts by alot of members. Some have been enlightening (conciencia, Miranda) Others have been just sad at how complacent the 46% of island residents are. Ive heard it before... "you dont live on the island, what have you done to make Puerto Rico a better place?" The answer is simple... its actually a question. What CAN you do? No matter what is said and done the fate rests not in the hands of a Puerto Rican. I hope you will have an open mind if you respond. Im pretty sure you will

Philly and Eggo,

I can not difuse your reality statements, but the issues presented by EGGO are misleading since currently we annexed with USA and look ate the current conditions of our hospitals, and other areas. Education is not that bad compared to other Nations around us but it can be improved. Eggo if we have no identity we are nobody, what reasons do you have to live if there is no country, flag or pride. A humanbeing always needs to find itself and belong to something that is not Taboo it is reality. We still have a chance to become a country by our own means and not by being dumb by the USA( that would be a shame). Philly we all are not stamp or under welfare, most of us work hard really hard, the other most takes the federal help and also work hard too, no difference. We Rican American have the same right as the one who live in the Island no difference. We can actually help even more for any cause Puertorricans may persue since our influence here is powerful. We can also as Rican Americans open corporations in PR to help even more our people. We have that much power and we should employ it.
