Newark man dies in crash on I-95 near Del. 273

A 20-year-old Newark man was killed Saturday after he lost control of his car, veered off the highway and into a stand of trees.

The red 1994 BMW 31c, driven by Michael A. Tirado came to rest on its roof along I-95 north, just south of Del. 273.

State police Saturday night were still trying to piece together details leading to the crash just after 5 p.m. and north of the I-95 service plaza near Newark.

Delaware State Police spokesman Sgt. Joshua Bushweller said Tirado was found underneath the overturned car and was treated at the scene by county paramedics.

He died on the way to the hospital, county paramedic spokeswoman Sgt. Kelli Starr-Leach said.

His passenger, 19-year-old Viviana R. Londono of Kearny, N.J., was taken to Christiana Hospital where she was treated and released.

Both were wearing seatbelts.

According to Bushweller, three cars were seen speeding north on I-95, weaving in and out of traffic, just prior to the crash.

“The other two vehicles had nothing to do with the one vehicle crashing,” Bushweller said, adding that they apparently did not know each other.

After the red car ran off the road, a witness called police to report the incident and followed the 2002 Saturn north to the 1-95/I-295 split until troopers arrived.

The vehicle was stopped on I-295 at Del. 9 and Audrina Clyde, 22, of Bronx, N.Y., and a passenger were taken in for questioning.

Clyde was later charged with reckless driving.

“Her vehicle was not a factor in the crash,” Bushweller said.

The two right lanes of the roadway were closed for four hours.

A white or gray BMW, Bushweller said, was the third vehicle seen speeding and weaving through traffic, but continued out of sight.

Bushweller said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Cpl. Michael Anthony Tirado, age 20, of Beaufort, SC, died suddenly on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at Christiana Hospital, Newark, DE, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on March 11, 1987, Cpl. Tirado was a graduate of Elkton (MD) High School, where he excelled in wrestling and football. Following high school, he proudly enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was currently serving his country in Beaufort, SC. He was previously a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2007. His aspirations following his military career included working as a SWAT police officer, modeling and becoming an executive chef.

A car enthusiast from his youth, Cpl. Tirado was a member of the Ruff Ryders Car Club in South Carolina. He was also a great fan of the Atlanta Falcons. In his leisure time, he enjoyed playing video games and listening to all types of music, particularly hip-hop, R & B, and reggaeton. Most of all, Cpl. Tirado will be remembered for his complete devotion to his family, especially his beloved mother.

He is survived by his mother, Theresa M. Tirado of Newark, DE; 2 brothers, Emiliano Reveron, Jr. of Newark, DE; and Jose A. Alvarez of Newark, DE; 2 sisters, Oribel M. Reveron and her fiancé, Eric D. Ray, of Newark, DE; and Kristina T. Tirado of Paterson, NJ; and his nephew, Eric D. Ray, Jr.

Friends may visit 5-7 pm on Monday, February 25, 2008 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
