Hello everyone. I know its been ages.....
I barely have time to breath, but I just wanted to share an opinion/observation with you guys.....
After a 23 year absence I finally went to PR. Stayed two days at El Convento's Pablo Casals room (at their compliments), and loved it. Then it was time to go to Humacao y Naguabo. What a disappointment! My memories of a beautiful place was turned into a reality of unkept roads, potholed-highways, beaches, etc. I was so heartbroken. The worst was yet to come. After I arrived at Botija I found out PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION WAS TERMINATED! How the hell can that happen? People stuck asking neighbors for rides to town or the store. Their explanation was that everyone drove. Well not everyone drives and that included my father who is dependent on a neighbor driving him around for errands. Whose to blame? The people for being CONFORMISTAS! The people get what they deserve for not being involved in their governments activities. All those politicians are up to no good. In retaliation for the Navy being forced out of Vieques, the Republicans in Capital Hill closed up Rosey Roads leaving the area in destitution with no back up plan. Where was the governor on this? Meanwhile the politicos do nothing but manage to get through their term for the luxury of having the title of holding office and earning a paycheck. Que barbaridad.

well you can't have it both ways....they wanted the NAVY gone out of Vieques but didn't think of the consequences of the economy the NAVY brought to Vieques in the long term.
the republicans didn't want to close the NAVY base in Vieques.....again go look at the facts why they close down Vieques.....and look at Vieques now compare to when the Navy was there....night and day in terms of the economy. Blame the independentistas, populares and anti-americans who made a big deal about it....now the Navy is gone you dont see them or hear from them in how to make Vieques economy prosper again. They wont even visit Vieques..but to prostest and kick the Navy out to make a anti-american statement they will show up anywhere. Last edited by MikeRavens; 29th April 2012 at 21:59. |

Well Vieques is not Rosy Roads and I bet
Well Vieques is not Rosy Roads and I bet if the issue had to do with a state in the mainland and not a bunch of Puerto Ricans this devious "I'll slap you for not doing as I say" would have not been executed. It is only because ricans are seen as inferior did this happen without an outcry in congress.

Vieques depended entirely from the economy brought by the Navy base of Rosy Roads......
you have your facts wrong.......many bases have been closed down in the states since the end of the cold war and their local economy hurt. The BOOT CAMP where I did my basic training in the Navy in 1990 in Orlando was closed down so was the training base in San Diego .....the Naval Air Station in Alaska where I served was closed down too....and hundreths of more in the states and overseas for all branches......its call CUT BACKS after the cold war and it started under a democrat congress in the early 90's. But Vieques wasn't closed down because of cutbacks....it was closed down because of the local activists and Puerto Rican government of Sila Calderon who wanted naval operations stopped, so the United States instead of having a bad image problem everyday on t.v. pulled out with a deal made by Clinton with the Puerto Rican government.....but at the end it was the Vieques and Puerto Rican economy who suffered. The Vieques situation could have been handled different and better by the locals and they could have had their cake and eat it too.....and when I say the locals I mean the people of Puerto Rico and some of their local politicians who exploited this for short term political gain. they wanted the Navy gone and they got it........now you blame the United States and bring out the race card?......where is your evidence? I say get your facts straight....Im a Navy vet and I also did training in the 90's in Rosy Roads and was very upset how the locals handled the situation which at the end hurt themselves. I'm not talking about Vieques.
One had nothing to do with the other and this is not a NOW issue. It has been previously known and previously discussed. I'm just saying the PR government stood by and did nothing. A governor with cojones would have rallied up the island but he did nothing.

you wrote in your 1st post:

1) you are talking about Vieques and Rosy Roads............unless there is another place in the world call Vieques and Rosy Roads. 2) The government of Puerto Rico at the time sided with the activists and the protesters for political gain in P.R.....it was Bill Clinton who finally made a deal with the Puerto Rican government to stop naval operations in Vieques that made ROSY ROADS worthless and had to be closed down hurting the Puerto Rican and Vieques economy. 3) The governor at the time did rallied up the island but to kick the Navy out.........if you stop naval operations of a military base the base is WORTHLESS and it has to close down. Why would you have a military base that can't have operations? why would the United States spend millions a year to maintain a naval base that it can't do operations and it has to go someplace else to do their operations?....you don't make any sense, You have your facts wrong....once again it was the locals and the Puerto Rican government due to activists and anti-american sentiment pressure who campaigned to stop naval operations that eventually closed down Rosy Roads and killed the economy. |

Welcome back Janemas, I I visit PR. every two years or so. It changes slowly, but I do agree, it is going down hill. People for what ever reason have lost some of their pride. Times are hard and the island is infested with a bad drug element. the police have their hands full, but are corrupt as well. hope things can change, but I don't see it coming soon.
