Spanking children-FOR OR AGAINST

The issue of spanking children is a delicate one. Todays parents are less inclined to physically discipline their children. I speak of spanking, not old school ass whuppin with daddy's belt or an extension cord. I'm sure that some of you were disciplined in this fashion. I was a recipient of many a belt whuppin, courtesy of my mom. This sort of tactic will land you right before a judge, who at the behest of any state family division, will throw you in jail and take the kids away from you.

Where do you stand on this issue? Can children do something that would merit a spanking? Where do you draw the line? If he/she steals, does he or she get his or her butt tanned? If he/she raises her hand at you, would you tag that behind. If they blatanly disparage you by saying something like F-you Mom or Blow it out your ass Dad, do you then hit em where the good Lord split em?

Are time-outs effective? Is taking away their favorite things an effective means of punishment? What discipline measures do any of you favor?
