7. Everyone in Puerto Rico will be a college graduate and most majors will be in computers and high tech fields, nonetheless, contrary to when PR was a colony, they will all stay in Puerto Rico and they will all have jobs in their area of study with a decent salary and benefits.

8. People will be raised like civilized human beings and there will be no more crimes, drugs, alcohol, prostitution or any other unethical or immoral activity.

9. Utopia will no longer be a fig of imagination but the real thing. Puerto Rico will become the real shining star not of the Caribbean but of the whole universe.

Background on the Self-Determination for Puerto Rico Debate

More than 104 years have passed since the U.S. gained control over Puerto Rico from Spain after the Spanish-American War. For over a century, the US citizens of Puerto Rico have been treated as second-class citizens living within the world's oldest colony administered by the world's oldest democracy.

Like New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska, Puerto Rico has gone through a partial process towards statehood (citizenship and local state-like constitution). Unlike the States, residents of Puerto Rico are US citizens: without voting rights, unable to vote for a President and without Senators or voting Representatives.

Like the Philippines, Congress can unilaterally declare Puerto Rico an independent nation, today. Puerto Rico's relationship with the mainland is subject to federal sovereignty, yet denied federal representation.

Puerto Rico's current status is listed as commonwealth, a position that does not represent a voice for its citizens. All political parties reject the current status and Puerto Rico's last local plebiscite illustrated less that 0.06% of the population supports the current status.

Congress has prevented the US citizens of Puerto Rico from choosing for themselves. It is important for mainland citizens to urge Congress to effectively represent the 4 million silent U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico. Congress has ultimate control over enabling a process of self-determination - Puerto Rico's destiny.


Please realize that all the arguments in the world will not help our people. Most people when presented an argument, all they do is argue blindly because most don't listen. What we must do is prove and show how we feel, by becoming proactive. Spread the word, educate the people. The more "Aware" everyone is, whether they are our compatriots or our "American" brothers, the more we will be able to put a stop to this situation. We must continue to speak up, but when doing so, we must do it in a manner that people will listen, not turn a deaf ear. Make everyone realize how undemocratic and degrading it is to be held as a colony, for this extensive time. Make our people realize how crippling it is to them. Something must be done and soon. Many people do not react unless they are shown how it is affecting them personally. These are the people we must reach since it seems that it is the majority.
