Are immigrant Hispanics learning English as fast as they should? Not according to American conservatives. In fact a large segment of the Republican party thinks that the presence of Spanish is a factor in the eventual linguistic fragmentation of the nation. Many point to California. Are they correct to believe this?
On the other hand Puerto Rican Statehooders ( except La Ñoña Miriam) believe that the presence of Spanish will eventually push the Gringos to accept a Spanish speaking state. In fact Radical Statehooders go as far as wanting to create coalitions with other Spanish speaking Representatives in the House and Senate, then push for the creation of a "BILINGUAL NATION." Many Statehooders point to the fact that THIS WILL HAPPEN NO MATTER WHAT! It already is happening! They point to Spanish TV, Spanish Ads, Pop Music, Bilingual education etc. etc. Puerto Rican Statehooders are counting on the continued existance of Spanish for the eventual acceptance of a Spanish speaking State sometime in the near future. BUT ARE THEY CORRECT? Will Spanish one day be along side English and thus disprove the Independentista cliché which says that we will loose our language by becoming a State?
