YES.simply because when it comes down choosing between statehood and independence the mayority of the people still want's to be american citizens, but you can't have it both ways.we just have to get rid of that P.P.D. bug which is really a limbo.only then we can really see the truth.

No. It should not become a state and it should not try for independence. I fear that independence will lead to communism. See what good that did for cuba and especially Russia. And then what Puerto rico becomes a state and you have to pay taxes and the official language will be English, the official flag American. Why is this such an issue? Be content with the way things are.

Puerto rico's official languages are spanish & inglish.sure P.R. is gonna have to pay taxes(dont you pay taxes,)but we dont have any representation /voice in the U.S. congress.this country is turning bilingual, you can see that everywhere.i believe that before 30YEAR FROM now we may have a hispanic for president.we as P.R.(AMERICANS)have a better chance, because WE ARE AMERICANS.

I can see that everyone is clearly divided on the subject of Puerto Rico's status as it relates to the U.S.A. The only thing I can add is that to break ties with the U.S. may cause more problems for the island than it already has. Depending on the outcome of Puerto Rico 2000, all Puerto Ricans--regardless of whether they favor statehood, complete independence, or an improved commonwealth status--should begin letting all officials (in Puerto Rico and in the mainland U.S.) know that the preservation of Puerto Rican culture must be a top priority regardless of the outcome of Puerto Rico 2000. Independence may cause a cutoff of U.S. funds. Commonwealth status may simply keep Puerto Rico the way it is with all current problems intact. U.S. Statehood may force citizens to conform to an even higher degree of American standards and culture while it gives Puerto Ricans greater access to voting. Therefore, all statuses at this moment in history have advantages and disadvantages. The question to ask yourselves is: Is Puerto Rico's culture and way of life solely determined by its political status? Peace, lja

PUERTO RICO?
IT IS REALLY FREE! WHY? BECAUSE IT IS A FREE NATION. WHAT NATION? USA, YOU CAN TRAVEL ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD, VOTE, FREEDOM OF SPEACH, RELIGION, ETC... PUERTO RICO IS PART OF THE U.S. AND THE U.S. IS PART OF P.R. JUST GO TO ANY MILITARY BASE IN THE US AND YOU WILL SEE OUR PR FLAG FLYING ALWAYS TO FULL STAFF. BUT IF YOU WANT TO BE INDEPENDIENTE, THEN JOIN THOSE OTHER MILITIA GROUPS FROM THE CONTINENTAL US THAT WANT TO BE INDEPENDIENTE FROM THE STATES. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BE A LITTLE REPUBLIC, THEN TRY LIVING IN ANY 3rd WORLD COUNTRY IN LATIN AMERICA BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT PR WILL BECOME FREE FROM THE USA... |

When I was a little boy I though my Dad had all the money in the world, and whenever he told me he had none I told him to go get more...
Sameway with Commonwealth. Do you think that the money that the Island receives in Federal Grants comes out of an infinite source??? No, it comes out of me and a few other taxpayers in the States. And let me tell you, I pay lots in taxes (I think it is $32K out of my $60K salary). That really limits what I can afford. In the meantime, there are several drug-addicts in the Island spending their welfare check on more dope, and plenty of politicians (mayors?) syphoning money, that they should be spending on roads and other projects, into their personal bank accounts. One day the U.S. Congress is going to smell the Coffee and wake up, and decide not to spend one more dime on a territory that does not pay taxes, and they will give our Island what it does not want, but that it deserves: INDEPENDENCE. And I bet that then they will not allow us Puertoricans to migrate in droves to the States: the same way they gave us our citizenship (Congressional statute), they will take it away. And you will see many of us having to earn our American Citizenship the hard way: become a Resident Alien and pass an exam in English about the duties and rights of an American Citizen. So what then? Lets take the opportunity while we still have it, and become a State of the Union, before the racist Congressmen that hate us have it their way and unilaterally give us what we don't want: INDEPENDENCE. There is a Proverb in the Bible: "A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it." Proverbs 22:3. |
