I THINK THEY NEED TO LEAVE PR ALONE. IF WE BECOME A STATE THEY WILL MAKE ENG THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE & START AMERICANIZING PR.
AS IT IS WE WERE NEVER MENT TO SPEAK SPANISH BECUZ WE ARE REALLY INDIANS, BUT THE SPANIARDS INVADED THE LAND OF BORIQUEN. ENOUGH HAS BEEN DONE TO OUR ISLAND, LEAVE IT BE. THINGS AREN'T THE SAME IN PR & THE STATES. OUR CULTURE WILL AGAIN BE TRIED TO BE CHANGED, FOR THEY WILL WANT US TO DO THINGS THE AMERICAN WAY. THIS IS A WAY TO ERASE OUR STATUS & OUR PEOPLE. I TOTALLY AGAINST STATEHOOD. WE ARE A NATION & THEY NEED TO LET US BE. THEY SEE WE ARE GOING PLACES & THEY WANT TO GET CREDIT FOR IT! ------------------ STAR ESCOBAR: THE SHINING STAR OF THE CARIBBEAN! |

Bueno, I think that we should NOT become a state. However, we cannot afford to become independent. As much as i may hate the idea of being associated with the US, we would never survive as an independent state. they have stripped us of everything that would have helped us survive. As a commonwealth, we still have a say so to some extent. And it feels wonderful to be able to go to a basketball game out there and hear our BEAUTIFUL anthem in that wonderful language. and though it is true we have been already robbed of most of our heritage that being the practices of the Taino Indian we have become assimilated people of three different cultures and as we stand today defined as puertorriquenos we are a reflection of our hertiage, struggles and all. So to become a state as part of the US or any other country for that matter would be robbing ourselves of our own.

Honestly now. If US pulls out we will become another poor country, look at all this other islands around us trying to make it on their own, doesn't that tell you something, even South America, they are not doing great. Why you think all these people migrate to US?
How many of you live in PR? Only in the last few years PR is starting to look good. PR needs help, schools need help, towns need help, people living in shacks need help, I can not believe how many people still have an aluminun roof that blows away at the first sign of storm. We are not going to loose our culture, our flag, our anthom or even our language, it would take centuries to make puertorricans speak English and even then, I guarantee Spanish will always rule. Look at all the states withing the US that have their own culture, their flag even their lingo! J.Vargas you are in Hawaii, how much did Hawaii change after US took over? Not a whole lot. I love PR, and I go there as much as I can, but I sure can not get over how much poverty is there. I look at the schools and I see total destruction. The main reason I can not go back to live is because I want my kids to have a good education and PR is not offering that. To better PR everyone has to be involved and if that means taxes the so be it. I pay taxes now where I live, I rather pay taxes in PR if that would mean I can go back. I Know the US goverment is corrupted but so is PR goverment. Lets help our country, lets give our children a chance to a good future. |

Hi Jackie
Hawaii did change a lot! Hawaiian is not the dominant race here any longer. The hawaiian language is not spoken here. It is total english. But it is different than Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is dominant spanish! It would take centuries to change that and I doubt that very much. We would still control our culture just like any other state of the union control thier destiny. But Hawaii has allowed thier culture to be what it is today. Now they are fighting back to establish a nation within a nation. We'll see how it works. As far as the politics in PR. Your right, it is corrupt. The people are not told the truth from either republican or democrats. These are the 2 dominant parties. The people need to know the truth. They need to know the pro's and con's in order to make a valid judgement. But that is not going to happen any time soon. But the question is, how long will the U.S. continue to support a country like Puerto Rico. Nothing good last forever!! |
