Interesting subject, I think this should be left for the people that still live on the island. Leave it to a vote, let the people decide, weather it needs to be a state, who knows, we have'nt done bad since we became a commonwealth, what would change now, provably nothing, the only thing if you want to vote for the president of the US move stateside otherwise nothing would be different, sure you'll make more money, but the taxes will go up too!!!

Hello nite996, At the present time both parties in Puerto Rico el Partido Popular Democratico (Commonwealth) y el Partido Nuevo Progresista(Statehood)are supporting a bill that the Puerto Rican living in United States to vote on the referendum because it almost impossible to break the margin between both parties, 48% to 46% it is to close to call. United States will never accept Puerto Rico to become State under this condition, a great mayority (80%)is needed to make any changes. The United States is evaluating the possibility so we need to be prepared. Esta es nuestra patria, we need to understand our own situation. Jose Massachusetts. |

To all those concern about STATEHOOD, don't worry, PR will eventually become a State.
More and more people are for it every day even in the US. The only way to get a majority fast is by making a referendum in which only two choices apply Statehood or Independence. If that would to occur, at least 95% of the population will vote for it. You see most Puerto Ricans will not give up their social security, passports, US citizenship and so on. The thing is people are scared of change so we have to push the VOTE of ending Common Wealth for good!. Puerto Rico WILL BE THE 51st STATE IN THIS NEXT CENTURY. |

I beleive puerto rico would benefit immensely if it were to become a state, from what ive seen and heard puerto rico is a veritable hotspot with a poor economy and divided government.I fear that there is going to be major problems and things are going to escalate beyond control.I am both puerto rican and white and speak no spanish, but i was born in vieques.I currently have family residing there and i am very concerned about the whole situation. But puerto rico is a jewel and should be treated as such.I feel that if we were to become a state it would be a tremendous boost to the economy as well as better living conditions for those that still live there. My culture makes up who i am and no one can take that from me unless i chose to give it up.Now is the time to band together and forget about politics(nothing good ever comes from that anyway)and do what is best for our island. As i said before ive lived almost my entire life in the U.S but vieques is where im from and we all need to come from somewhere.
