As Cos tells it, we ain't learnt nothin' yet
Retrieved on 05/21/04 from http://www.newsday.com/entertainment...id3811870may21,0,7539165,print.story?coll=ny-entertainment-headlines The Washington Post May 21, 2004 Bill Cosby was anything but politically correct in his remarks at a Constitution Hall bash in Washington commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision. To everyone's astonishment, laughter and applause, Cosby mocked everything from urban fashion to black spending and speaking habits. "Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal," he said Monday night. "These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids - $500 sneakers for what? "And they won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' ... "They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English," he said. "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't.' 'Where you is.' ... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. ... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!" When Cosby finally concluded, Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking stone-faced. Shaw told the crowd that most people on welfare are not African-American, and many of the problems his organization has addressed in the black community were not self-inflicted. I do not consider myself a conservative and I agree 100% with Cosby's remarks. This generation is throwing away the hard earned rights and benefits that other generations so valiantly fought for with their blood and deaths.

The main ingredient for good students and outcomes is a nice set of parents. In some instances a nice set of grandparents can help if the father or mother are gone. It all boils down to having a family that teaches children by example. The poor children in the US come from one parent homes. It is very rare to see a poor kid from a two parent home.
A large segment of the Puerto Rican population has been raised by parents that only want to live off the government and these folks fail to teach their children otherwise. Getting pregnant at age 15 is the ticket into government dependency for most of poor girls whether black, Anglo, or in our case Puerto Rican. I hate to sound like a conservative since I am one that advocates a mixed economy with strong government programs to help the poor. However, the latter can be done without perpetuating the so-called "cultura de la pobreza". As a veteran of WWII my dad used a government program to get ahead---- the GI BILL. I know this can be done, however there must be a national plan to improve the quality of parenting. The sad thing is that many left wing educators who are in charge of the system do not believe in the concept that a “strong home is important for an education”. These folks firmly believe that they can overcome that by spending more money in schools. One is always reminded of the Asian students who attend the same schools that supposedly failed the blacks and PR folks. Somehow, these Asians manage to do quite well and get into college. If I was in charge I would make sure all public school students receive intensive training in ethics from day one-------- twice a day for 12 years. All students would be required to wear uniforms and the disruptive students would be removed and placed in boot camps. In other words------ run the public school system like a private school. It has been said the private schools do better because they can remove the bad students whereas the public system has to keep them. I say get rid of the bad apples and place them in boot camps.
