Twelve-month-forward growth for our Brazilian stock universe of 133 companies was at 26% this month. The government posted the highest budget surplus since 1991 as recent economic growth has helped bolster tax-revenue, bringing the budget surplus up to 5.63 billion Reais. President Cardoso is scheduled to meet President Bush in Washington on March 30, with a common goal of further strengthening ties between the two countries.

The Consumer Services sector posted expected growth of 137%, down 11 points since last month. Consumer Durables is expected to show a decline in earnings of 46%. Multibras and Brasmotor are now expected to show year-over-year earnings declines of 52.9% and 60.0%, respectively. Following Itautec's reversed split on January 12th, the company swapped its existing preferred shares for common shares to boost trading in the stock.

Overall, Brazilian growth fell 3 index points. Consumer Durables suffered the worst, losing 37 index points this month. Here, Multibras lost 43.5 index points. The Capital Goods sector lost 10 index points since last month. In this sector, Duratex lost 10 index points on its forecasted growth, which ended at 58.4%. Petrobras Distribuidora now has forecasted growth of 20.5%, down from 27.1%. The Consumer Non-Durables sector lost 8 points since last month, and now is expected grow earnings by 40%. Here, Ambev's 12-month-forward growth went down from 80% to 65%. Ambev had a net 3 downward revisions for 2001. Perdigao had growth of 67%, up from 60% last month. The Public Utilities sector went down by 15 points, with annualized growth of 40% this month. Cemig had annualized growth of 37%, down from 40% last month. Telemar lost 3 points on its 12-month-forward growth since last month.

Net revisions for the Brazilian universe were -5.5 % for 2001 and -2.0% for 2002. The Transportation sector continued to flourish, with 11% net positive revisions for 2001 and 10% net positive revisions for 2002. Airplane manufacturer Embraer had 2 net upward revisions for FY1 and 1 net upward revision for FY2. Basic Industries had net revisions of -10.7% for 2001 and -5.6% for 2002. Iron ore producer CSN sold its stake in Vale do Rio Doce last month. CVRD had 4 net downward revisions for FY1 and 2 net downward revisions for FY2. Souza Cruz had 1 upward net revision for both FY1 and FY2. The Finance sector boasted 14.9% net upward revisions for 2001 and 13.6% net upward revisions for 2002. In this sector, Banco Bradesco had 5 net upward revisions for FY1 and 3 net upward revisions for 2002.

The 12-month-forward P/E multiple for the Brazilian Universe was at 10.9, up slightly since last month. The Energy sector's forward multiple closed the month at 8.3. In this sector, Ultrapar had registered a forward P/E ratio of 6.3. The company's fourth-quarter earnings were affected by rising costs of petrochemical inputs. The Consumer Durables sector had a forward P/E ratio of 17.8, doubling that from last month. Here, Multibras' P/E ratio jumped from 8.7 last month to 20.6 this month. The Consumer Services sector's forward P/E multiple went down by 6 points to 23.2 for this month. Sadia's P/E ratio climbed to 6.3 from 5.4 last month.
