The term "commonwealth" was applied to the
Estado Libre Asociado which was the status granted in 1952,with that status came the post of Comisionado Residente which is a congressman who cant vote. As for whether there should be one or not well if it were up to me there wouldnt be we would be an independent nation,I wish it were true that the majority did not want to be part of the U.S. but they have voted to maintain the status quo,so we have a useless congressman in Washington. |

Italia,
First let me begin with a simple answer for your arrogance and ignorance. The Majority of Puerto Rico wants to remain in a territorial type status followed closely, and I do mean closely, by the statehood supporters and then we have the independence movement which is a small minority (3-5%). Now where do you get that Puerto Rico does not want to be part of your country. A country which I defend in its service. You there are two individual which I disagree in this forum most of the time one that I can not stand and trust me I do not have to mention his name he knows who he is, but one thing is for sure people who speak like you are the ones that leave a bad impression on people who have spent over 100 years under a colonial status and 50 years of a pretended commonwealth status. El Boricua, States, as you like to call them, like VA/PA/MA/KY are commonwealth and not just by name but by right. Yes this status comes with the same basic rights but none the less they are and continue to be a "COMMONWEALTH" and represented properly in congress. Dorcas, Yes we have a resident commisioner, what you called a congressman. The difference is simply clear no voice, no vote, no equal rights for the people which he so called represents. Oh and by the way do not be fooled that Puerto Ricans do not want to pay taxes because many pay higher taxes with this so called commowealth than many status in the union. |

Senor Vazquez:
First LET ME begin by saying: I AM NOT ARROGANT! Ignorance, maybe...but I am asking a question, not because I am stupid, or as you say arrogant...BUT BECAUSE I HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK THE QUESTION BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ALL OF THIS! I do NOTappreciate what you said about me! You ask where I get the belief that Puerto Rico does not want to be part of the U.S.Well, it seems like that is how the majority feels! The comments that are made and the opinions that I hear are what lead me to believe this is fact. I DO NOT SEE THE NEED FOR YOUR ATTACK ON ME or for you to COMPARE ME to someone (whom I have no clue who you are talking about). You don't even know me, you do not know what kind of person I truly am...so before you go PASSING JUDGEMENT ON ME JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T AGREE WITH MY BELIEFS OR OPINIONS, MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY TO UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYONE DOES NOT KNOW EVERYTHING, AS YOU MUST THINK YOU DO. I ASK QUESTIONS BECAUSE I AM INTERESTED IN LEARNING, NOT BECAUSE I AM STUPID OR ARROGANT. ![]() Lastly... in your last sentence of your post...you stated; "YOU THERE ARE TWO INDIVIDUAL WHICH I DISAGREE IN THIS FORUM MOST OF THE TIME ONE THAT I CAN NOT STAND AND TRUST ME I DO NOT HAVE TO MENTION HIS NAME HE KNOWS WHO HE IS, BUT ONE THING IS FOR SURE PEOPLE WHO SPEAK LIKE YOU ARE THE ONES THAT LEAVE A BAD IMPRESSION ON PEOPLE WHO HAVE SPENT OVER 100 YEARS UNDER A COLONIAL STATUS AND 50 YEARS OF A PRETENDED COMMONWEALTH STATUS." I am not quite sure what you mean, and would appreciate it if you clarify that last sentence, without referring to me as stupid, ignorant, or arrogant for asking! Thank you Kindly, Italiana |

Dorcas, Italia,
Concerning your question about Puerto Rico's commonwealth status; Puerto Rican's have a congressman, however, he does not really have a voice in Washington. Italia, you said that the majority of Puerto Ricans want to be Independent from the US, however the Majority want to remain the same(Commonwealth). The truth is that this is changing, however, it will take time. What many Puerto Rican are arguing about is that under a democracy, which we in the US have, we (Puerto Rico)should have real representation in Congress. Our men do fight in the US military, they have since WWI, therefore, they should also have the right to pick a representative for us. I feel that something has to change. If the people of Puerto Rico had more voice in the election maybe they would feel a better connection to US issues. Unfortunately, with over 80% of the Island as registered voters, this could intimidate many Government officials in Washington. |
