The problem with statehood are too many.
1. PR all raady pay to much taxes. 2. If it become a state PR would pay billions and billions to the fedral goverment. 3. They would have to pay so much that everyone would move to the state and all the white rich American would move to PR and change everything. PR would no longer look like PR but something very urgly. I wont be surprice if they change the name PR to Rich Port to make it easy on them. 4. They would make English the official language just like the rest of the states which ia fedreal law now. PR would not be able to do anthing. 5. PR love to watch everything in Spanish. Just think when they would be force to see everything in Englinsh. They would miss the old PR just like we miss our PR in the States. But then it would be to late. 6. But like I said before. Is up to our people to make the right choice. I just pray they do. |

Well, I don't support statehood or independence, but I can answer you.
1. PR is taxing all it's people. It taxes them 30+%. If it became a state it would have to pay federal taxes as well. Also remember though that PR would have control over the distribution of money in Washington. Every State has "pork" given to it because they have representation. PR does not, so it can not get any extra money out of Washington unless there is a Huricane. 2. If PR became a state, it would NOT pay billions to the Federal government. It may pay a few million. You have to remember that the federal tax system is based on "income". PR has a 13% unemployment rate, so they would be on unemployment and can't pay anything. Since PR would come in as the poorest state it would recieve more money then it woud pay. Let me give you an example. For every dollar NY sends to Washington, it only get's back about 65 cents. For evey dollar Mississippi sends to Washington they get back $1.40 from the government. The government takes money from the richer states to help the poorer states. Most of the aid going to the southern states is for economic development. If you have been to places like Georgia, N. Carolina, etc. you see the construction of highways, railways, etc. That money is from taxpayers in all states not just Georgia, Mississippi, etc. If Puerto Rico were a state it would have 6 Congressman, and 2 senators that would help control the purse strings of the budget, and you can be sure that they will take more for the island. That is how polititions get reelected. They bring back money from Washington. 3. This is a joke. I'm sure you really believe this, which is even more scarey! If "rich white people" wanted to make it easy on themselves, then why did they keep the names "Los Angeles", "San Francisco", "San Diego", "San Antonio", "Miami", "Pheonex", "California", "Colorado", "Texas", etc? Why would they move to PR if they were rich? They could do it now if they wanted to, but they like Florida much better. Besides you said yourself PR has too many taxes! Rich people don't like taxes. 4.Don't you think the people would want to take a foreign language? I'm sure they can take one now. People have choices. I had the choice of taking:German, French, Italian, or Spanish in school. Currently English and Spanish are both listed as "official langages" of Puerto Rico. 5. If everyone in Puerto Rico moved to the US like you said, the island would be filled with white rich english speaking people, so why not have television in english? There would be no one in PR who spoke spanish anymore according to you. Seriously: Why would a television company change all of it's programs from Spanish to English? First of all that isn't very good business they will loose subscribers. Secondly there is no market in Puerto Rico for ALL english television shows! |

Another reason is the PNP party it self.
First the governor said no more shooting and the next he said ok, the marines could stay. This is the most crazy thing a party could do. Even before this happen the PNP was down in the poles now after this who know how low they would get with the Puerto Rican people. For sure this year the PPD would win and in return would keep the flames of a free PR alive. |

Keeptrying ;
you should come down and visit towns like Santa Barbara.. Tucson...San Antonio.. Santafe... And for that matter Los Angeles... these where all "Spanish towns " like San Juan.. Ponce and Mayaguez... now all we are are second class citizens... serving margaritas to all of these gringos... Spanish as beautiful as it is the language you speak to your maid or the person that clears a table for you.... Soon you will tooo be like us... I hope that the fear factor will shape you up to scream for your INDEPENDENCE!! CARAJO!!! |

Pocho:
I have visited Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and other area's of Calif. My brother lives in Ventura. I even like how Santa Barbara's zoning code is strict. All buildings must have that spanish style to it. I think if you feel like a second class citizen, then you are. When you use words like Gringo, then you fall into that class. When ever someone uses language like that to knock down another person, people they don't even know, then you are no better. I get offended when ever anyone uses words to knock another race whether it is against blacks, asians, whites, hispanic, who ever. It seems like you are so resentful towards whites. Why? If you feel like a second class citizen, then why stay? Why not move to Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Spain, or even Mexico? |
