Mike,

What does Puerto Rico wants? Look when it comes to money, even the Spaniards had to spend a lot of their money (much of it which came from our own gold they took away from the island) to stay and keep Puerto Rico a colony.
>>"To further attract settlement, the Crown temporarily abolished tax collection, and encouraged the settlers to cultivate sugar by granting the farmers favorable loans. The Crown also provided Puerto Rico with an annual subsidy, one "greater" than was had by all of Mexico."<<

So even in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century Spain had to make a big investment to maintain the island. Here's a little more; "In Puerto Rico, for one reason or another, the people’s sentiments were in accord with Spain’s policies, a "stark" contrast to the anarchy that spun countless revolutions upon governments after governments that succeeded from the Empire. The Puerto Rican governors worked hard to suppress any actions that might spark movement toward independence. They rivaled the idea of independence by taking a real interest in the island’s problems. They improved schools, built hospitals and roads, and supported economic growth in many ways. For the time being these needed concessions lulled Puerto Ricans into submission. But the Puerto Ricans still had some unresolved issues. There was an immediate concern over the degree of autonomy some governors had over the Islanders’ daily lives."

And as you can see, even back then, people revolutionized but to no avail, the majority accepted to what in that time was good to them, the same many Puerto Ricans would do today to preserve the rights they currently have.

Take care,
R Rosas

The fact is that the same Spanish government that you claim to have fought the Americans abused the island population for four centuries until the island was ceded to the United States, it was then and only then that the island gained "true" freedom. In closing, you should remember that the people of Puerto Rico asked not only for statehood but for the citizenship we all enjoy today, they were not forced to take it, as a matter of fact the people elected to have it by an overwhelming majority and that's something you cannot change. Look, the thruth is that you and I know that no matter what, Puerto Rico will never be independent, for you and others it may sound like a "threat" but that's just the way things are and will be for centuries to come. The sad thing here is that many Puerto Ricans underestimate their ability to succeed when they get caught up in the "discrimination game", blaming their failures on the system rather than to themselves. Success and prosperity is just outside the door, all you have to do reach for it! You know that!

Have a good day.

Forced independence? Nah, I have to respectfully disagree with you. Stay the way we are right now? Maybe. Statehood? also a maybe. The only thing that's really preventing P.R. from becoming a state of the Union (in my personal opinion) is perhaps the language issue. The citizens of Puerto Rico don't want to have the english language as part of their culture and Congress want english to be the official language as a condition for statehood because that's what the constitution calls for. It happened to Arizona and many other states before they were integrated into the union. Hawaii and Alaska has also a small group who wants independence (they always did even before integration) but I'm sure they know that's impossible since integration is a process that cannot be reversed. People are afraid of changes, they don't give themselves a chance. Only time will tell what the future of Puerto Rico is going to be.

WHAT HAPPENED IN OTHER STATES HAS NOT
HAPPENED HERE THERE WAS NO INFLUX OF
ANGLO-AMERICANS AS IN TEXAS AND HAWAII
UNTIL THEY OUTNUMBERED THE POPULATIONS
THERE,OR ALASKA WHICH WAS BOUGHT BY
THE U.S. FROM RUSSIA,IT IS A DIFFERENT
STORY IN PUERTO RICO WHERE THERE IS NO
LARGE POPULATION OF ANGLO-AMERICANS TO
TAKE POWER LIKE THEY DID IN HAWAII IN
WHICH THEY JUST ANNEXED A SOVEREIGN
NATION AND YEARS LATER ASSIMILATED IT
INTO THE UNION,BY THE WAY DID YOU KNOW
THAT THE LARGEST MINORITY THERE ARE
PUERTO RICANS WHO WERE TAKEN OUT OF
PUERTO RICO BACK IN THE EARLY 1900'S
THE LANGUAGE ISSUE A BIG PROBLEM IN
LOUISIANA WHERE THE STATE WAS FORCED
TO ADOPT ENGLISH AS ITS OFFICIAL
LANGUAGE AS A CONDITION TO BEING
ADMITTED INTO THE UNION.
ANOTHER FACTOR IS THE AMERICANS THEMSELVES
THEY WILL BE AGAINST THE STATEHOOD FOR MANY
REASONS AND WE INDEPENDENTISTAS WHO LIVE
HERE ARE CONSTANTLY REMINDING THEM THAT ITS A BAD IDEA.
FORCED INDEPENDENCE SURE IT IS VERY POSSIBLE
AND IF THIS LAST ANY LONGER PROBABLE,OF
COURSE THEY WONT CALL IT THAT THEY WILL PUT
A PRETTY FACE TO IT,EITHER WAY IT WORKS FOR
ME THE PEOPLE WILL HAVE TO LEARN TO STAND
ON THEIR OWN TWO FEET.

Cool

The only way PR would be force to be a free country is if we bring it to the American public. Many Americans don't even know where PR is. If we tell them they could save billions they would call the congressman right away. Why do I believe PR should be given their freedom without PR voting on it?
Is very simple. PR was taken by force. If PR was ask then this would be a different story. Then they should let our people vote on it. But the problem was the we were taken by force in the beginning and for the reason we should be free without a vote.
