Because they are STATES!!!

Right now we are just a miserable freeloading territory.

As a banana republic we could do the same, but only a STATE can have the economic and political power of the United States of America to back up their negotiations .

Talking And the independence

To add to El_Jibaro comments, besides there is the option to become an state, there is also independence.

The independence will bring more freedom to Puerto Rico to do all that, than a state.

Just to give you a little insight, my company, which is a 100% Puertorican corporation, will triple its capital, if Puerto Rico becomes a Republic.

On the other hand, if Puerto Rico becomes state, my company will loose 38% of the actual capital.

Why, because Puerto Rico will be more open to worldwide commerce than they are now. To include bringing jobs to Puerto Rico from countries as far as Great Britain, France, Canada, and many others long established democracies.

On the other hand, Puerto Rico will have the freedom to help the whole latin-america get become more stable, since Puerto Rico will be the key element and the jewel of the caribbean and latin-america industrial and commercial site.

Right now the USA is controlling many aspect that could improve the lives of all these countries in our area, and the USA don't want these countries to get ahead because of fear that they and us, will become as powerful as the USA.

Lets face it, it is a cold war that the USA would like to maintain its superiority.

And I am not talking about warheads and armies. The power of the commerce, which Puerto Rico has been denied for over 100 years.

Unhappy

I don't know El_Jibaro. The USA has very strict commerce rules. So bad that many states would like to be separated from the USA government ruling.

I am not making this, and I know you are pro-statehood and pro-usa, so anything that sounds against those ideals are wrong to you.

But the fact is that the USA has a great control on the worldwide commerce and like to dictate with who you can do business or not. Then there are all these trades rules that the USA would like to impose to all nations in the world if they have a chance.

All comes to one goal, making sure that the USA has the edge in commerce, and not one else can have that power.

Believe me, I deal with this environment everyday.

Talking Exactly........

Nationalist, you are absolutly right, the USA has very strict trade regualtions, and it has many of those on PR right now. In INDEPENDENCE, we would be able to sign treaties was as many countries who would accept, something a state cannot, and we will be able to create our own trade laws and ship our goods on a less expensive trade lineary.( currently we are shipping on the most expensive in the world) We will be able to make as much tax exsemptions as we chose, and try to attracts as much diverse buisness from as many nations as we chose, and also we can tax our own buisnesses as we chose in Puerto Rico. All this wont be possible under statehood, yes we will be given more money, but for what, WELFARE, yes, we will. Mostly nothing will change if we were a state, except more poverty from all the local, and now federal taxes, and more people will run to welfare as a resource, something that wont happen in Independence, where you will have to work to survive and survive we will, and so will our cultural identity. So El_Jibaro, you can burn that flag with a 51st star, because it wont happen, but you can keep your hopes up, its your beliefs!

Sorry my friend, but we are not a miserable freeloading
Territory. Who took PR by force? USA. We have not
receive nothing for free. Our countrymen have die
In blood in almost every war USA has fought. This pay
For everything we got from USA and our Small Island that
The Navy wants so badly. Only a free Puerto Rico could
We see the true light.
