Today's olympic basketball game between Puerto Rico and Team USA was awesome. I was riveted to the TV! I feel very proud and happy that Puerto Rico's team finally showed their mettle. I am absolutely astonished, but suprised? Nah...
Kudos and congrats to Puerto Rico's basketball team. May they sustain their winnings and bring home the gold. P.

Not willing to soil Puerto Rico's Olympic triumph with our damned politics, I prefer to see this win for what it really was: a great game, damned good sport, fantastic players, well-conceived strategy, and a joy to watch. Speaking of Miss Universe and stuff, how about Puerto Rican women? They need not be paraded like french poodles on a stand nor do they need to earn a fake diamond diadem for the world to recognize either their beauty or their talents. The beauty, the intelligence, and the strength of Puerto Rican women are simply a given fact of the universe, just as E=mc^2. I ought to know, I've been married to one for almost 20 years. But if you really REALLY need these "symbols," friend, knock yourself out. You go your way, I go mine, whistling "don't worry be happy." But don't think for one second that you're better, more "Puerto Rican" than the rest of us just because you hold these beliefs and we don't. P.

I used to be for independence and the concept itself I still believe is good.
But our people are not ready for it. A long way from being ready. But they'd better get ready, should Congress have their way. I think statehood (modified) is best right now, and give PR about 15 years to prepare for statehood. Identity and culture doesn't necessarily have to be lost. Look at Hawaii. Look at Alaska. And on a different plane, look at Florida. Hawaii maintains her natural identity, while it is just as "Americanized" as PR is. So how is it that people who argue that we would lose our culture and identity believe such a thing? Alaskans, while also mostly americanized, have a way of life totally apart from the citizens in the contiguous United States. Florida is part of the continental US, however, half of the state seems like a melting pot-Latin-America-central -- from Tampa southward. If anything, a variety of different cultures and ethnicities has TAKEN OVER Florida, rather than anglo-culture (whatever that is) imposing itself upon the people who inhabit the area. But no matter. Congress will make the decision for us all, unless the islanders rise up and make their collective voices heard. I still think modified statehood is best for right now. And allow for us to get dual citizenship once there IS independence. |
