The Bird Refuge in Boqueron Forest

Boqueron is a fishing village that is only three miles away from the bay. It is normally full of locals and tourists since it is a great vacation spot. The bay is beautiful with miles of palm-lined beaches full of coconuts. The waters are so clear that you can easily see the stunning varieties of coral that lie beneath the surface. This is the stuff dreams are made of. This lengthy stretch of shoreline is broken up into three distinct beaches: the Las Salinas, Villa Taína and the Los Pozos. Each year the annual International Caribbean Offshore Powerboat Race is held here during the off-season. It is also here in this small bit of paradise that you will find the Boqueron Forest Bird Refuge.

The Boqueron Forest Bird Refuge is made up of four hundred acres of mangrove wetlands and is a very important bird sanctuary. The Bird Refuge can be found south of the town of Boqueron near the bay and is run by the Department of Natural and Environment Resources (DNER). Tourists can visit the Bird Refuge from Tuesday to Sunday from 08:00 A.M. to 16:00 P.M. Visitors should be aware that the refuge is closed on Mondays.

The Boqueron Forest Bird Refuge is of vital importance because of the rare migratory birds that you find nesting there. There are over sixty different species of local and rare bird species that inhabit this area, so if you bring your binoculars you will be in for a treat. The Boqueron Bird Refuge is perfect for a family outing since there are many activities to keep you and the children entertained. These include boarded walking trails and hiking trails in and around the grounds, as well as many biking trails. On the southern side of Boqueron Bay you will find facilities for kayaking. This interesting alternative provides a whole new way to explore different parts of the Bird Refuge.

During winter you will be able to see a variety of duck species that migrate to the refuge each year, including osprey, herons and mangrove canaries. In some parts of the Forest Bird Refuge you can not only admire the water bird species there but also spend some quiet time fishing in the areas allocated for such activities.

"The Boqueron Forest Bird Refuge is of vital importance because of the rare migratory birds that you find nesting there." This statement is contradictory-if the birds are migratory, they so not reside, therefore - do not nest.
