Spectacular Views at Cruz del Vigia
There are few attractions in Puerto Rico that can mirror the spectacular scope of scenery which is found at Cruz Del Vigía. This great lookout spot is often combined with tours to the Museo Castillo Serrallés and the two make for a great morning or afternoon outing. You might want to plan a picnic lunch to enjoy from the hillside too as there are few places in Puerto Rico that make a better venue for such an activity.
When you arrive in Ponce, one of the first things you will notice about the surrounding hills is a massive cement cross that is perched high above the city on the crest of a hill. This cross measures 100 feet in height and 30.5 meters in width and is actually an observation tower from where you can see not only the beautiful city of Ponce but also the point where the hills descend towards the coast and disappear beneath the Caribbean Sea. The tower itself is known as the Cruz Del Vigía while the hill is commonly called El Vigía Hill. Most visitors start with a trip to the tower where a small fee will have you whisked to the top of the tower in an elevator. The elevation can be quite dizzying and is probably not recommendable for people who are somewhat afraid of heights. The facilities at Cruz Del Vigía are very basic so if you are traveling with small children you will probably find the restrooms at the museum more accommodating. The Museo Castillo Serrallés is only about 20 feet away from the tower.
El Vigía Hill has long been noted as being a good lookout spot and a number of lookouts were posted on this hill by the Spanish Crown during the 19th century. Many people feel that the views from the hillside itself are just as good as those from the top of the observation tower but this is really a matter of personal preference. The Cruz Del Vigía is located on the grounds of the Serrallés Museum and visitors can roam the premises at their leisure. The Museum was once a residence for the Serrallés family who produced Don Q Rum so the building is quite elaborate and stately. Why not take a drive up El Vigía Hill and discover these many fine attractions for yourself? You won't regret it.
